    Default 2014 Conferences after realignments

    From Phil Steele's Blog

"Conference Re-alignment has been the talk of the college football world for the last couple of years and it looks like it has no end in sight. Even for someone like me who routinely works 100 hours a week during football and magazine seasons, it can be tough keeping up on who will be playing where in the future.

As of today, here are what the college conferences will look like for 2014..."

    OK Guys,

Time for some creative thinking about Conference realignment. Assuming the AQ conferences remain as currently comprised, the number of schools in each will be ACC - 14, Big 12 - 10, Big Ten - 14, Pac 12 - 12, SEC - 14. That leaves the new American Athletic with 11, Navy joins in 2015 making it 12 teams and allowing for a conference championship game. C-USA has 13 with UNC Charlotte joining in 2015 to make a 14 team league. The Mountain West has 12 teams. The Independents will make up 3 schools after this season, BYU, ND, and Army. That leaves the MAC with 13 teams and the Sunbelt with 11. Would it make sense to merge these two conferences for football only to make 4 divisions of 6 teams each and play a championship game (North, South, East and West divisions). The winner of the North plays the winner of the South, the winner of the East plays the winner of the west on Championship Saturday in early December. Then the two winners of those games play one another in the Combined Conferences #1 bowl game, assuming one of those teams does not qualify for a top tier bowl (ie like one of the old BCS bowls). The two runners up (the two teams that lost their games on Championship Saturday) play each other in the combined conferences #2 bowl game.

Each team would play the other 5 within their respective division, then one game each from the remaining 3 divisions for a total of 8 'Combined Conference' games (four at home, four away) then play the normal 4 OOC games.

Division breakdowns could look something like the following based on geography:

    North
    Buffalo
    UMass
    Central Mich
    Eastern Mich
    Western Mich
    Toledo

    South
    Ga Southern
    Ga State
    South Ala
    Troy
    ULL
    ULM

    East
    App St
    Akron
    Bowling Green
    Kent St
    Miami, OH
    Ohio

    West
    Ball St
    Northern Ill
    Ark St
    Idaho
    New Mexico St
    Texas St

Just a thought about how we could move forward as in a football only arrangement. Let me hear your thoughts.

Realignment ideas accepted from message boards... unlikely.

Coaching hire ideas accepted from message boards... unlikely.

End zone "front porch" ideas accepted from message boards... unlikely.

Tailgate menu decisions decided on message boards... 30% chance (unless it's chicken chili)

    Go Trojans!

I look for something much like this to happen. Every conference is looking for an angle to make more money AND legitimize their conference to have better chances of making it to the big dance. Who knows? It might end up with a semi final and championship game in one conference then see where it goes from there. Look for crazy ideas over the next two years.
