Default Obama: "Rich Need to Pay Their Fair Share"

I keep hearing him and the Dems say this, so how much is "their fair share?"

The term I have heard used is "redistribution of wealth". That means those supporting this idea won't be happy until everyone has an equal amount, irrespective of contribution. History has shown us this philosophy works extremely well (see USSR, Cuba, Venezuela ...).

socialism fails because it removes the incentive to work harder than ones has to. it promotes laziness to some degree and stifles the drive for inovation.

if you are going to earn the same amount for producing 10 widgets as you will for making 1,000 widgets, well by god it makes more sense to make 10! why work yourself harder if you won't earn any extra?

BTW, I witnessed the middle-class riots of Maracaibo Venezuela first hand. I saw socialism at work as Chavista police shot tear gas and other projectiles into a crowd who were angry because Chavez was taxing them into poverty.

he used the same term, "pay your fair share," as he drained the wealth of those who worked for it and used the money to prop up failing social programs aimed at appeasing the poor.

I spent 4 summers there. the last summer I was there, the military had check points at the edge of every town with tanks and AK-47 wielding troops there to "maintain order."

they were actually there because he was bussing in Columbian nationals across the border to vote for him in the reformation vote. again there were middle-class protestors, again they were shot at with tear gas and other projectiles.

the army there now wears red berrets, which stand for Chavez. they no longer where the proud black berret of the Venezuelan National Guard.

as you can gather, I am very opinionated on the subject.

not that the two leaders are linked, just a sidebar that I think tells a very interesting story about far-left politics and what they can lead to.

That's exactly the kind of tactics used to insure the survival of such a political system. For those who think it could never happen here, think how villanized those who have worked hard to succeed here have become.

First we make it bad for one to have more than someone else, even if that extra is earned by hard work and ingenuity. (already done). Second, we tax the extra to give to those who have less - irrespective of the reason they have less. (trying to accomplish that now). Then, once the wealth has been "redistributed", we pay everyone the same for making 10 widgets as 100.

We are in the process of boiling frogs alive in this country.

While I am concerned with our country's direction, I don't feel worried that we will see anything like Venezuela has undergone.

Chavez was able to take control and consolidate power because of the poverty situation in Venezuela. 20% of the population held 80% of the wealth there prior to his ascention, and the government was rife with corruption...largely because of us unfortunantly.

the state of poverty was also much more extreme than anything our country has ever seen. We visited families that lived in trees, litterally. hammocks hanging from branches.

Chavez gained popularity because he was able to hand out rice and beans to the destitute in return for their loyalty. we really don't have anything like that going on.

Still, Venezuela is an important lesson that we all should observe and learn from.

I've also spent time in Bogota Columbia. the FARC, a Marxist guerilla army intent on overthrowing the democratically elected government of Columbia and establishing a Communist/Socialist regime, is sponsored largely by Chavez. I've seen this war from both sides of the Columbian/Venezuelan border. it is destroying the region.

"Their fair share" is not being singled out for tax cuts while the rest of the tax brackets pay the same. Frankly, I don't care what the tax rate is provided one bracket doesn't get preference over another and that's what Guppers have been protecting for the last year: their own tax brackets. Thank you, Dubya.

Get some people who aren't multi-millionaires in congress and I think the world would be a better place.
