IMO Jamie Hampton is Troy's most talented QB but Levi Brown has a strong arm and seems to be a relatively mobile QB. Steve Spurrier really liked him a few years ago. I know its too early, but I think both Hampton and Brown will battle for the starting job during spring/fall practice.

Levi Brown

QB Levi Brown (6-4 212) of Mount Juliet High School in Mount Juliet, Tennessee will officially visit South Carolina this weekend. Brown is a dropback passer with a big arm, according to his coach David Crawford. "He can stand back there and sling it," Crawford said. "He can run if he has to as well. But he doesn't juke, he'll just lower his shoulder." Brown suffered a deep bone bruise in his right knee during the sixth week of the season. Crawford attributes that to the reason many schools have shyed away. Brown has scored a 4.0 GPA and will graduate this December. He will look to enroll in a school in January. Ole Miss, Kentucky and Richmond are the other schools after Brown. But Crawford says Brown is impressed with USC. "He really liked the way Steve Spurrier Jr. came in and talked to him," Crawford said. "He was real impressed with that. So that's why he's gonna visit." So far no schools have offered Brown, including the Gamecocks."

"Mount Juliet (TN) quarterback Levi Brown (6-4, 210, 4.7) is a very intriguing prospect. The Gamecock coaches are very interested in him and an offer could come this weekend once they’ve evaluated his senior film. He plans to graduate in December, which certainly helps his stock. If USC offers I expect a commitment to follow shortly after. He is a legit prospect; otherwise USC would not waste a valuable visit on him." (Gamecock Sports Center Archive)

I attended the practice on yesterday 3/24/08. Based on what I witnessed I think the race might be down to three. All four Qb's took snaps for the first hour or so, but toward the end it appeared that the search might have been narrowed to three players. I would estimate the last hour of practice was allotted to #12 Jr. Levi Brown (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1147126&Q_SEASON=2008), #7 So. Jamie Hampton (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1147185&Q_SEASON=2008) , and #11 So. Tanner Jones (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065077&Q_SEASON=2008) . I will attend practice for the next two days and report back on this situation.

Having played on the OL and DL in high school I tend to pay more attention to these aspects of the game. With that said I did not actually keep track of who took the most snaps or who took the first snap. It just appeared to me that perhaps Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback Coach Neal Brown (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87292&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=937306&Q_SEASON=2008) had set #16 So. Jonathan Chandler (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065088&Q_SEASON=2008) to the side at least for the last hour of the practice. The reason I say this is because I don't think he took any snaps during this period. Now I will try to pay more attention to how these four are utilized in today's practice. As far as listing the three (Brown, Hampton, and Jones) I woud say that they all three got equal time yesterday. However, I think it is important to remember that this is spring training and the coaches are still evaluating all of the players.

O-Line looking good?

I heard John Schlarman (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87292&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1139604&Q_SEASON=2008) Offensive Line Coach refer to these five as "number one" when he wanted them on the field. Chris Jamison (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065229&Q_SEASON=2008) #65 Sr. LT, Tyler Clark (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1148301&Q_SEASON=2008) #58 So. LG, Danny Franks (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065260&Q_SEASON=2008) #75 Jr. C, Wesley Potter (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1147503&Q_SEASON=2008) #67 Sr. RG, and Dion Small (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1147492&Q_SEASON=2008) #74 Sr. RT. As I recall these were the five that started the FAU game at the end of last season. I think that we will have a good deal of depth with Will Chambliss (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065234&Q_SEASON=2008) #68 Sr.,Steven Merkel (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065244&Q_SEASON=2008) #69 Sr., Steven Adams (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1065252&Q_SEASON=2008) #73 Jr., Tyrell Curtis #72 Sr., and newcomer Micah Grimes (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87291&SPID=10377&DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=1147273&Q_SEASON=2008) #78 Fr. all seeing a good deal of work yesterday.
Personally I feel good about the OL, because they have all seen alot of playing time. IMO these nine players provided good protection for the QB last year. It will surprise me if this part of the offense has a problem this coming season. Jacob Creech is another Fr. that I was going to watch closely. However it is my understanding that he will miss the spring with an injury. It would be nice to have another Tyler Clark this season pop up.
If you remeber this kid was a walk on and ended up starting several games last year.

Levi Brown is a redshirt junior not a senior, thanks for the info. regarding practice. Look forward to a report tonight after practice this afternoon.

With so many QB's on the roster you have to think that one of them at least may have transfer thoughts if Spring Training doesnt go their way? It will be interesting to see which one if any leaves to go to a DIAA school in search of playing time.

I have been told by opposing high school coaches that one of the qb's will never be able to take a D-1 snap.

Technically havent all 4 on the roster taken d-1 snap already? hampton and jones last year, chandler the year before, and levi at richmond (d-1aa actually)?

The comment about a qb not taking a D-1 snap could possibly be about one of the incoming guys this fall. The post wasn't very clear regarding a current qb or a incoming qb. It's correct that all the current qb's have taken snaps.
