I'll admit that I don't know the game as well as the coaches but there are two things about Troy basketball that I don't understand --
Offense -- we live and die by 3-pointers. When the other team comes out to stop our threes we don't play well inside the arch. I like three pointers but I would also like to see some fundamental basketball to work the ball for layups, dunks, fade away jumpers, etc. We don't get too many offensive rebounds for a second shot.
Defense -- we live and die by a zone defense. We have a full court press and that keeps the game fast and creates turnovers. But I don't see anything wrong with switching to a different defense; different zone and/or man-to-man. the other teams seem to go in a half-time and tell their players what we are doing and how to get around our zone. Then they come out in the second half and beat us. A full court press is nice but other teams figure that out too. I've never felt we had what someone described as a smothering defense. We get turnovers but the other team still scores a respectable amount. However, we do get a lot of defensive rebounds.
One of the things I saw Saturday that I thought was particularly bad was the passing. Passing the ball at the right time to the right player is critical if you want to win games. I saw too many balls go into the stands Saturday. And foul shots. Don't they practice them??
I agree with the others that JUCOs are short term solutions. We need to recruit and constantly be building for the future. There's lots of good basketball players in the area waiting to be recruited.
