Top 10 DB prospects
Small-school standout Leodis McKelvin leads pack
Posted: Thursday February 21, 2008 9:07AM; Updated: Thursday February 21, 2008 9:09AM

Leodis McKelvin possesses the versatility that makes NFL scouts drool.

Here is the list of the top defensive backs. This list was compiled through a series of conversations with scouts and through game tape evaluations.

1. Leodis McKelvin, Troy, CB: The small-school standout has all of the tools to become an elite corner on the next level. As a talented athlete with exceptional speed, quickness and footwork, McKelvin excels in man coverage from press or off. He displays great natural instincts, and has a feel for route recognition. Although he often fails to come down with the interception, McKelvin's penchant for getting his hands on the ball is impressive. Additionally, McKelvin brings outstanding return skills to the position. As a punt returner, he averaged over 17 yards per return as a senior and had seven career return touchdowns. With such an impressive array of skills, it is not surprising that McKelvin ranks as the top defensive back in the draft.

From ESPN Draft Central...

7. N.E. Patriots (from 5-11 San Francisco) -- Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
Record: 18-1 | Needs: ILB, CB, OLB, OL depth

Previous mock selection: Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida
The Patriots would like to inject some youth at inside linebacker, but there isn't a player worth selecting this high, with USC's Rey Maualuga and Ohio State's James Laurinaitis both returning to school in the fall. The next priority is to find a replacement for Asante Samuel, a free agent who can't be franchised for a second consecutive year. McKelvin currently is the top-rated cornerback in a 2008 crop that is deep but lacks elite talent atop the board. As always, look for the Patriots to shop this pick heavily.

Pete Prisco from CBSsportsline has him going to the Pats at #7 as well.

He tweaked a hammy the Wednesday before the game...he dressed, but didn't play. I've read that he did really well on the drills, at the beginning of the week...

They had a few videos of the DBs and other players working on drills on NFL.com and he was very impressive on the clips they showed of him. On the videos he always gets his hands on the ball but never can seem to complete the interception.

Today is the big day. The combines can make or break you. Anybody have NFL network? They are showing all things combine related.
