GIANTS SET TO RE-SIGN TYNES
By PAUL SCHWARTZ

February 12, 2008 -- Lawrence Tynes , who missed two field goals in the NFC title game before nailing the 47-yard winner in overtime to send the New York Giants into the Super Bowl, was rewarded yesterday for sticking with it, as the Giants are close to giving him a five-year, $7 million contract to remain as the place kicker and avoid free agency.

In his first season with the Giants after three in Kansas City, Tynes endured an action-packed year, starting off shakily and gradually finding his footing with this new team.

Tynes finished up hitting 23 of 27 field goal attempts during the regular season and hit 5 of 7 in the postseason. He hit a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLII to give the Giants a 3-0 lead in a game they would win 17-14, stunning the Patriots in Glendale, Ariz.

The free agency signing period does not begin until Feb. 29, with safety Gibril Wilson , linebacker Kawika Mitchell and punter Jeff Feagles the key potential unrestricted free agents the Giants would like to re-sign.
