Sitting near the band and the cheerleaders for a game or two, I have a few comments to make...

Starting on a positive, the band sounds great! The volume is awesome and you can tell the musicians are good at what they do. Secondly, and not so positively, why is it that the band only has negative things to say about the other team, but very seldomly says positive things about the Trojans? I enjoy the enthusiasm in the opening segment while the other team's lineup is being announced, but why can't that same enthusiasm carry over to supporting our guys? On the same note...why are the cheerleaders so quite? Who/what are they LEADING? The only reason you can hear them is because of those blasted megaphones (and the males' voices are annoying with little emotion!) The box is small enough that with a little effort, your own voice would carry and there would be no use for them in the first place. And, how about filling in dead space with .... a cheer! Instead of arm-chair point guarding and telling our team which shooter to block! I am sure the players and coaches would consult you if they thought you had any insight into the game that they were somehow missing!

The basketball team needs our support, even when the three's aren't sinking! It may be more fun to downgrade the refs and the opponents ( I enjoy this myself!), but remember that we are there to cheer our Trojans along!

GO TROY!!!

There are a number of times that we (the pep band) start the defense (clap, clap :D ) cheer to try to help our guys and when there is a real good play we show our appreciation or we clap the rythm the b-ball team came up with that pumps them up. I'm not really sure what there is that we could do while we have the ball that wouldn't be a distraction to our guys trying to do their thing on the floor.....does that seem to sound right? I'm not really sure how the communication thing works when we're on offense, if we would distract from what the coaches are trying to yell or whoever the point-guard would be trying to communicate with the guys on the floor. We are open to any suggestions to help out more on offense.

Where else can a 160 pound band guy yell at a Division I athlete and get away with it?

It's too bad too, it sounds like it the band got proactive and kept cheers going it would solve the cheerleader problem as well. Usually, the band guys do know more about the sport than the cheerleaders.

If other students would get proactive, the cheers would keep going too.......also, if fans didn't leave before the game was over and the winner still in doubt, it would send a message to the players. I witnessed the comeback last year when a bunch of people headed for the door and we tied it to send it to overtime and then had to play two overtimes before we finally won. The people that left never saw that great ending to a game that we were getting our butts whupped most of.

Please dont sit there and bash the band/cheerleaders. There have been many many occasions where I have seen fans in those chair back seats sitting on their butts. I can tell by the other band members comments that its still an on going problem. If you look at other normal schools such as Duke..they stand and cheer the whole game. This isnt the damn library folks..get up and help these guys!
