Troy University to Celebrate Homecoming on Oct. 20


Troy University will celebrate its Homecoming on Oct. 20, under the theme "Homecoming '007: A Bonding Experience."

Activities will get under way on Oct. 20 with the annual Homecoming Parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. and process through downtown Troy. Following the parade, various tailgating activities will take place throughout campus. The Homecoming court will be introduced during pre-game festivities at 2 p.m. in Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium. The Trojans will take on North Texas beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Halftime activities will include the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen, presentation of the Alumni and Honorary Alumnus of the Year awards and performances by the Alumni Band and Troy University's Sound of the South marching band.

"Homecoming is always a special time for Troy University and we want extend a warm invitation to our alumni to return to campus, take advantage of all of the special activities that are planned, reunite with former classmates and get a first-hand look at all of the exciting changes taking place on campus," said Faith Ward, director of alumni affairs. "This year our theme is Homecoming '007: A Bonding Experience, and we look forward to having our alumni and friends join us to renew those bonds from yesteryear and create new ones that will last a lifetime."

During the week leading up to Homecoming, campus organizations will compete in different events to earn points toward winning Homecoming honors.

Troy University to honor outstanding alums, honorary alumnus on Oct. 20

Troy University will honor three alumni and one honorary alumnus with Alumni of the Year awards at halftime of its Oct. 20 Homecoming game against North Texas.

Stacy Faison of Phenix City, Lee "Bubba" Pinckard of Elba and Samuel Whalum, Jr. of Montgomery will be honored as Alumni of the Year, while Dr. Douglas C. Patterson of Troy will be recognized as the Honorary Alumnus of the Year.

The awards are presented annually by the University as a part of its Homecoming celebration. Nominations are solicited, and winners are selected by the Troy University Alumni Association's Board of Directors based on outstanding professional accomplishments, civic achievements and loyalty and service to Troy University.

Faison, who earned his bachelor's degree in accounting (1999) and a Master of Business Administration (2002) from TROY, currently serves as senior relationship manager/vice-president of private client services at Columbus Bank and Trust. He serves as president of Troy University's Chattahoochee Alumni Chapter and is a nominee for the Leadership Georgia 2008 program. Faison has served as the finance committee chair and co-chair of the Leadership and South Columbus Campaign for the Chattahoochee Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America, a board member of Uptown Under 30's effort to revitalize Uptown Columbus, a liaison for the Columbus Bank and Trust sponsored Sam Mitchell Dream and Achieve basketball camp and Rod Hood Football Camp. Faison is married to the former Tracie Pearson, who is also a TROY graduate.

Pinckard, who earned a degree in business administration in 1969, is owner and vice president of B&B Equipment Rentals, Inc. and is a member of the American Rental Association and the Florida Rental Association. An active member of the Troy University Alumni Association Board of Directors, Pinckard is a charter member of the Elba Troy University Club and also holds memberships in the Emerald Coast and Crenshaw County alumni chapters. He was nearly single-handedly responsible for the recent construction of additional office and storage space at the University's Alumni House.

Whalum, who earned master's degrees in human resources management (1994) and computer information science (1996) from TROY, is director of human resources for the Southern Poverty Law Center. He spent 27 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2001 as a chief master sergeant and commandant of the Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Air University. Whalum served as co-president of the TROY Alumni Association's Metro Montgomery Chapter and currently serves on the Montgomery City-County Library Board of Trustees and as chair of the American Red Cross of Central Alabama's Human Resources Committee. Whalum and his wife Jacqueline have one daughter, Kenisha.

Patterson, the Honorary Alumnus of the Year, has served Troy University since 1989, first as assistant to the chancellor for special projects and later as vice chancellor for system administration. In his current capacity as senior vice chancellor for administration, Patterson directs the institution's finance and budgeting, information technology, institutional effectiveness, strategic planning and athletics. He was instrumental in the University's move to Division I-A athletics and his stewardship has helped to make many of the new buildings on campus possible. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Patterson served as a platoon commander for a Combat Engineer Platoon and as an intelligence officer for the First Engineer Battalion of the First Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam. Patterson and his wife Lise have three children – Chris, Lauren and Natalie, who are all TROY graduates.

Unless things have changed it usually runs north on Three Notch Street where it intersects with Montgomery Street to Downtown, right on Elm Street at Court Square and ends around South Oak Street or South Market Street and Elm Street.
