Can anyone tell me what's the latest with the SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) chapter at Troy? I heard that Bobby Jon Drinkard is the new faculty advisor and that the chapter is supposed to be up and running again for the fall. Is this true?

I was in Troy this last weekend and heard they are not going to be back on campus this fall. But you never know.

I haven't heard anything, even in the rumor mill.

The reason I posted this topic is because back in the early spring, I received a snail mail letter from Bobby Jon that stated that he was the new faculty advisor for SAE and that the chapter was going to be restored this school year. The letter said that a group of hold-over pledges was going to be initiated into full membership and that these guys would be moving into the chapter house on Pell Street this summer. Since that letter, I have not heard a peep out of anybody. I don't talk to or see a lot of my old fraternity brothers, but I guess I'll have to give somebody a call at some point to see what's going on.

From what I've heard, they will not be back as they were denied by SAE's national fraternity. Therefore another fraternity on campus will be moving into the house.
ATO maybe?

I would think ATO would be the only one not in a house thats a possibility.

It's more than possible that the university will continue to use the house as international housing. With enrollment up as much as it is, housing is going to be hardpressed to meet population requirements, even with the new dorms on Collegedale.

It's been confirmed by Herb Reeves. ATO will be taking over the SAE house.

I have been very involved with my fraternity's alumni association and, therefore, have heard some of the Greek rumblings.
I heard that the new fraternity row was moved from the top of the lagoon area (near where the PiKaps built their house) to way up past the sorority row. But now it is pretty muich canceled due to lack of interest/financial ability on the part of the struggling male Greek system (Could it be because Troy is not supporting it propertly?).
Anyway, the Sigma Chis and Lambda Chis have lots of equity in their homes and will stay where they are on Pell. The Lambda Chis and Sigma Chis will no loner share a driveway. The LCAs will have a new driveway in/near the revene.
The LCAs are in the process is renovating their house (new, larger men's bathroom with new facilities, showers, etc.), new, large women's bathroom (with many stalls) new larger laundry room, new office/study, new kitchen and appliances, new tile and flooring rejuvenation, new wooden decks outside, landscaping, etc.
Much of it will be completed for this weekend's Summer Jam (live bands, wild game cookout, etc.). The alumni have come together with the actives, raised lots of money and really hit the recruiting effort hard.
With the focus of the campus coming toward Pell (new education building, etc.), and the lack of non-campus housing very near Pell (not as many noise complaints), it is probably best that the existing fraternities do not move.

Thanks for the Greek update - that's the best info I've heard on the fraternities at Troy in years.
Let's say that the SAE national headquarters does allow the Troy chapter to come back (and more than likely they will within two or three years), where in the world would SAE establish a chapter house?

There are very few places in Troy where you can have multi-family housing so the options are pretty limited I have heard. But with the connections SAE has in Troy I am sure they could find something that would be allowed.

The SAEs could rent on Three Notch, downtown or elsewhere as many fraternities did in the '70s and '80s, build onto an apartment house as the Pi Kaps did, or grab a remaining Pell house.
I feel for the Tekes, Dekes, SAEs, Alphas, Sigma Pis and others whose alumni have no "rock" to call home after they graduate, and no base for Homecoming and other gatherings. One of the main reasons my alumni group got so active during the past few years was to solidify finances, house payments and improvements, to improve membership quality and quantity, and to make sure our legacy was not lost. We expect hundreds back for this homecoming, and more than 150 alumni this weekend alone.
Other than the Lambda Chis and Sigma Chis, who else is on Pell now?
I know the Tekes, Alpha Phi Alphas, Sigma Pis and SAEs were once in the houses east of the original two. I guess Farm House is now where once of them were? Where is Delta Chi?

What happened to Sigma Pi as far as why that chapter is no longer at Troy? If I remember correctly, they disappeared from campus around 2000 or so and I never heard why.

Their numbers dwindled, and never rushed/pledged enough guys to keep it going, so . . .it just went away.

It goes, Coming from Sigma Chi, Sigma Chi, Lambda Chi, TKE, Delta Chi, FH, SAE(ATO now)
There are no empty Pell Ave houses and I think an existing apartment (like Pi Kap) is abou the only option. Troy has really made it difficult for students to rent houses unless they are related I have heard, so getting zoned for a Fraternity house would probably be very difficult in Troy.

Actually after personally speaking with Dean Reeves yesterday afternoon, the only movement ATO has made with moving into the SAE house is a "request." That's as far as the process has gone, and according to Dean Reeves and Dr. Schmidt at this time that's as far as it's going to go.
SAE is not out of the picture just yet.

Interesting. I was told there were a bunch of ATOs up looking at it on Monday or Tuesday, with some reps from the University I believe.

Come on ******* don't count out TKE. Teke made a comeback at Troy.
But anyways on to the other stuff, Sigma Pi got booted by their nationals and the university for low membership. In fact I think there were like 3 actives in Fall 2000 and then TKE got their house in Janurary of 2001 (were they still are today).
As far as finding SAE or any other fraternity a house it would be next to impossible. The Troy city counsel made some kind of ordinance stating that more that two people not blood related couldn't live in a house. Something about housing fairness.

You're right they were. And the "request" was entertained.
By all means there is not a fraternity in the house and a fraternity should be in there, however SAE is not completely out of the picture.
SAE is ironing out some needed issues with nationals at this time, hopefully to improve the motives and fundamentals of the fraternity. But they are not out of the picture just yet.
Now, by next spring or summer if momentum has not been gained by SAE and there national office to move back into the house. Then another fraternity will have a legitimate option of moving into the house.
I think the biggest thing was ATO only had four members that could move into the house. Due to oncampus housing issues Dean Reeves would like the house full, whether if it was fraternity, international students, etc., living in there.
Trojan Village added more living space to oncampus housing, but the enrollment right now is currently exceeding campus housing. So, housing would like all living quarters full on campus, whatever the situation may be.
Hope that helps you out.

Sorry. I had heard they were back. We got along well with the Tekes.
The Lambda Chi house is finally full again for this fall, with one-person rooms. It had been difficult to get guys into a relatively expensive housing option when the dorms and nearby new apartments were much nicer. The concrete box, double-occupancy dorms of old are long dead.

I agree it is very difficult to get guys to move into the Fraternity Houses with the sizes of the rooms, most are around 11X10, especially if you are trying to have two to a room. I lived for 4 years in the Fraternity house with two to a room and wouldn't change it for anything but kids today are different, a lot require there own room and won't consider a roomate.
