The talented playmaker, from Houston Academy, will spend his college days close to home. ScoutSouth.com talked with Stanley Jones Thursday night about his college choice.
“It all started when Troy played FSU (Florida State) close early in the season," Stanley Jones said from Dothan, (Ala.). "They showed they can compete with the bigger schools. They (Troy) have been doing well in the Sun Belt, and if they win the next two games they will be Sun Belt champions."
Jones has rushed for over 1,900 yards and 19 touchdowns to help Houston Academy earn the No. 1 spot in Class 2A in the state of Alabama. His Raiders are undefeated at 10-0 and are gearing up for the second round of the play-offs.
“My goal coming into the year was to rush for 1,500 yards and play mostly running back. I did not realize I would play so much on defense. I really wish I had my defensive stats because they are pretty good," Jones said.
“We are 10-0 and have a second undefeated season. It has been awesome, real fun. Earlier in the year we were kind of struggling, but we have come together and are hoping to remain undefeated."
The senior has set some pretty high goals for his freshman season at Troy.
“I want to start as a true freshman at slot receiver or running back," he said. "I want to win the Sun Belt like they are going to do this year. Before I leave hopefully play in a bowl game and a All-Star game.”
“I just loved the atmosphere," Jones said of his college choice. "It is a lot different than high school. The stadium seats about 35,000 people, and I hope the stands stay filled.”
Troy is the only school to extend a scholarship offer thus far, and the running back was asked if another offer came along, “Well, it would depend on who the offer was from," Jones replied. "My commitment is pretty firm. I am sure I will end up at Troy. I am a strong verbal."
Jones has a twin brother, David, who shares the same backfield and has rushed for over 500 yards this season. He will give up football and spend his college days at Auburn University.
ScoutSouth.com asked Stanley about the brothers going to different schools.
“I think it will be difficult. It’s not like we won't ever see each other again though. He will come watch me play all the time," he replied.
Houston Academy will host the Pickens County Tornadoes Friday night in the second round of the AHSAA play-offs.
