Lincoln narrowly kept its winning streak alive against Leon, winning 27-24 on Senior Night in one of the season's most exciting games so far.
Anytime it's Lincoln-Leon, it's a rivalry and you're going to get the best, Lincoln head coach Kyle Rice said.
Leon (0-6), which hasn't beaten Lincoln since 1998, came out like never before, getting on the board midway through the first quarter after kicker Matt Cade nailed a 46-yard field goal.
A rivalry always brings that out, Leon head coach Wade Rollinson said. Our kids have been hurting, and all you can do is keep on trying.
The game went back and forth as each team answered the other's challenge. Leon scored first in the second half, but Lincoln running back Ricky McGee, who rushed for 209 yards, answered with a 23-yard touchdown run after a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty on the Lions gave the Trojans a much-needed first down.
"We had to come together as a team," said Leon sophomore quarterback Austin Dantin, who completed nine of 13 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown. "We can't let this loss tear us apart. We're really clicking. . . . We're going to keep working hard."
Lincoln (4-2) managed to keep its lead in the fourth quarter after receiver Josh Gehres caught a 21-yard pass from quarterback B.J. Daniels, but what started as an evening of celebration for the Trojans ended with a sign of relief.
"We had to come back and fight hard in the end," Lincoln senior linebacker Xavier Lamb said.
The Lions, on the other hand, left knowing they had given their strongest performance of the season.
"We made a commitment to each other - we were going to play every play as if it was the last play in a 0-0 ballgame," Rollinson said.
"For that, I'm very proud of my kids. They did exactly as I asked."
