Feb. 1 can't come fast enough: Add Jackie Manuel Sr. to this list of people who can't wait for national signing day.
Manuel, coach of the Pahokee boys' basketball team, will finally have the full attention of his players after Feb. 1, when many of his players are expected to sign football scholarships.
All five Blue Devils starters — Robert Love, Un'Tavious Scott, Tanaras Jones, Casey Hobson and Antavious Wilson — play football, and three missed a whole week of practice and games this month for the Outback All-Star Game.
Still, Pahokee is 8-6 with two more weeks to play in the regular season.
"It's pretty late in the season and we're trying to get them into basketball shape," Manuel said.
Pahokee will have a big test tonight when it hosts district rival St. Andrew's, which is 17-1 and ranked No. 4 in The Post Top 10.
"We've been making some strides but the kids are trying to get their legs up under them and at this point, we're trying to prepare ourselves to make a good run at the end of the season," Manuel said.
Scott, a tight end, has committed to Troy University, and Love — who was named to the Class 2B All-State first team at quarterback — is still without a firm scholarship offer. Love is expected to visit Western Michigan this weekend.
Pahokee is near Belle Glade, along the southeast shore of Lake Okeechobee in western Palm Beach County. Pahokee is the main rival of Glades Central, where Omar played. That area - about 35 miles west of West Palm Beach (east coast) was ravaged in Hurricane Wilma - you, know, the hurricane no one payed any atention to. Some people out there still have no electricity. Troy will seem like a larger town to him.
