First it was Maestri, now Pierce, how long until Blakney is hanging up the whistle.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Troy head baseball coach Bobby Pierce announced that he will retire after the 2015 season at a press conference inside Tine Davis Fieldhouse on Wednesday morning.

Mark Smartt, who has been Pierce's top assistant throughout all 12 seasons at Troy, will take over.

Pierce and Smartt came to Troy in 2003. The Trojans have reached NCAA Regionals in 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2013, finishing as regional runners-up in 2006 and 2013.

Pierce has 420 wins at Troy, just 14 behind all-time wins leader Chase Riddle.

Smartt won two national championships as a Troy player in 1986 and 1987. He was named ABCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005, the year Troy won an Atlantic Sun championship. Smartt has 894 wins in 27 years as a player and coach. His son Chase is a Troy verbal commit and has led Charles Henderson to back-to-back Class 4A state championships.

"We are putting this baseball program in the best possible hands that it can be placed in," Troy chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins said.

Oh no, say it ain't so. Well he had a great run. I hope he gets 15 wins and becomes the winningest coach in Trojan baseball.
