If the rumors are true that we might lose a defensive coach or two. I say we get Dean on staff now. He resigned from CHHS tonight and I'm pretty sure it was not for another job yet. Weird dynamic over there....

To coach corners? Is that what you are insinuating?

Which ever position opens first on defense. Dude know how to coach that side of the ball.

Just 10 days after leading the Charles Henderson Trojans to the AHSAA 4A title game, Mike Dean turned in his resignation letter.

The Troy City Board of Education approved Dean’s resignation at its monthly meeting Monday evening.

Dean was 23-5 in two seasons as Trojan head coach, and is 55-20 overall in his head coaching career. Dean said the decision was not based by on-the-field issues, but by wanting what is best for his family.

“This decision first and foremost is about my family and what is best for them,” Dean said. “I came to Troy two years ago wanting this to be home. I have dated my wife since the 10th grade and we wanted this to be where we raised our children. But we aren’t real happy as a family, and we need to find a place where we are.”

Troy superintendent Lee Hicks said he is sad to lose Dean, but understands the desires of the head coach.

“We hate that Coach Dean tendered his resignation,” Hicks said. “He said he wants to be closer to his family. He has family in the Mobile and Birmingham areas. We want to thank him for what he’s done at Charles Henderson.

Under Dean’s guidance, the Trojans posted to of the finest seasons in the 92-year history of Charles Henderson football.

Dean led the Trojans to a 9-4 record in his first season as head coach in 2012, and finished 14-1 in the most recent campaign. Charles Henderson advanced to the quarterfinals of the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.

In two seasons has head coach Dean won 6 playoff games, the same amount of wins his predecessor Hugh Fountain won in 16 seasons as head coach.

“Coach Fountain was here for 16 years and did a good job,” Dean said. “However, our coaching styles are so different that maybe it didn’t mesh well with some. I may not be the best fit for Troy, but I will remember my time here fondly.”

Dean has been a head coach at four different schools in his six year as a head coach. He spent one season at Daleville following a long stint as defensive coordinator at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile. Dean returned to McGill following the one season at Daleville to the Jackets to back-to-back playoff appearances.

Dean resigned from McGill-Toolen in February of 2011, and was hired as the head football coach at Valley High School in Opelika in March. After spending one season at Valley, Dean accepted the job at Charles Henderson in February in 2012.

Dean said the timing of his resignation might be a mystery to some, but he feels it is the best situation for everyone involved.

“It gives me a chance to catch my breath and to go out and find a job,” said Dean. “It also gives the school and Mr. Hicks a chance to look for someone to take over. Come the end of January, I don’t have a job; so this gives everyone time to get things taken care of. I didn’t’ want to do anything secretly.”

Dean’s resignation is effective January 31, 2014.

That was quick! Best wishes Coach Dean

(These situations remind me of Urban Myer leaving U of Fla. "Oh, I'm sick and need more time with my family"...... yeah, right Urban!)

Don't know Coach Dean but given his record if moving school to school it reminds me of Sabin. Don't know what he's looking for but he obviously hasn't found it anywhere he's been. Not sure TU would be any different. He does a good job where ever he goes but he only stays......oh well!

Read the Dothan Eagle article, it is much better and has a lot more "answers" than the Troy Messenger article. He does not want to stay in Troy because of the people in it and how he and his family have been treated.

What has Troy done to him? Everything I have seen the red carpet has been rolled out for him.

The city of Troy has done nothing to Dean. It is a well known fact that they got rid of fountain to get Jamie Dubose out of Prattville. Dubose went to Florence for mo money. I have heard Dubose may be considering Troy now. Hicks was on Dean and interfering. But I believe the main problem was the 5 pr six families that run the school system wanted Dean gone. Told hicks it is him or you. They let Dean resign instead of being fired. I believe Dean is a good coach. My wife taught Dean's son and she said coach Dean always strived for excellence in his sons schoolwork. And I am sure that is the way he is about Football

Coach Dean probably sat their son's butt on the bench in favor of a more qualified player.

Troy will be Troy...unfortunately.

My family and I attended church with the Fountains and knew them well. The reasons for their departure was different from what is believed here. I think the current political scenario in the school system is accurate though. CHHS also until recently was a 5A category school and is now a 4A. When I attended there decades ago it was on the cusp of becoming 6A. The public school system is dwindling but population isn't and a certain public entity in Troy politics has poisoned the school system further. I expect further evacuations of talent from the teachers there who are disgusted by it.

The Troy school system is a mess... As is most of the schools in that part of the state except maybe enterprise.

You know there's a problem when Troy and pike county's population is growing but the school system is shrinking...meaning people
Are sending their kids else where.
