View Full Version : JEREMY WISE COLUMN: Troy football team back on the right path

What Troy fans should not feel, though, is that the program is spinning its wheels or that the team leadership is complacent. While Trojan supporters have every right to not be satisfied with a 6-6 record and a third-straight non-winning season, a closer look at what the Trojans accomplished this year reveals that indeed the Trojans are not far from the “glory days” again.

I am not close to the day to day aspects of recruiting and where we are. I am curious what our talent looks like to fill the graduating senior positions for next year. Would like to know by position if anyone has that information. GO TROJANS 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really think we were a better team in 2012 than our record of 5-7. Our record was better in 2013 but jmo that the 2012 team was a better team. Hope for improvement in 2014 and I think we learned that it takes 7-5 or 8-4 to get a bowl out of the Sun Belt.

Ask 8-4 WKU what bowl they are headed to this year...

I'm going to pull the 2-deep from the last game notes and we can get started. Now, this may get a little tedious, but we'll accomplish our task!

Sadly, if they were already in C-USA with that record, they would be in a very nice Bowl. This season showed you have to win the Belt or be second, after that all bets are off.

I'm not too particular about counting eggs before they hatch, but looking at the 2014 recruits that have committed to playing for TROY are two DEC grads that both won their respective bowl games. Bravard and Pruitt are going to push the guys that are here, period. The WR, Jarvis Bentley, is 6'5" and will likely be posted up on one of the outside positions. We are pretty well set on the OL with good depth and Garcia will be back.

Biggest holes to fill will be the DL...a lot of seniors are gone, but Gosha and DJ Johnson are a good start.

What a joke. The man has had three straight non-winning seasons, that means he is done. There is a reason that kinda record will get you fired from anywhere else...except Troy. And so many on here wonder way so many TU grads care more about Alabama and Auburn football than they do Troy...well maybe it's because Alabama and Auburn care more about Alabama and Auburn football than Troy does Troy football. They would never settle for this crap, if Saban had three non-winning seasons in a row UA would fire him...no reason Blakeney should still be here, smh.

f you hate the fact that Troy is loyal/honorable/poor enough (whatever the case is) to let the man who has built the program finish out the one last year on his contract.... then go watch another school. I mean honestly if all you can do is spew venom (which is all I've seen since the bowl announcement) the go watch another school that you feel has it together and/or it worthy of your "fandom"

I've learned that many of the AU/UA fans that attended Troy are those that come to Troy looking for freebies. Or they are the ones that show up to the bowl game with no clue of who our players are. Troy could go 12-0 and lose in overtime in a BCS bowl and those fans would disappear immediately.

trojanbrutha, thanks for the info will give me something to look over this evening. Just at a quick glance my first concern that jumps off the page is our QB position. How much actual playing time has Tidwell had and who is his backup.

This will be a very competitive spring with all 4 getting a ton of reps. Tidwell will be #1 going in, who comes out #1??? Might not even be settled till fall camp.

Lets hope we can land both QBs. We heard Erique Florence is no longer on campus earlier this week. Nothing in Troy land is secure. Especially not this day and age with recruits playing the decommit game like its no big deal. Hopefully ?s on the staff haven't deterred these kids. Also hoping the big schools come and scoop them up at the last minute.

With it being the early signing period and these QBs being Dec grads, I would imagine that these are solid...I haven't seen anymore announced signers since Bentley.

He didn't "build" anything, if he did we wouldn't suck right now. I stand corrected...he built a mediocre football program.

And like him now or not, how can any Trojan fan who knows his history say LB didn't build anything? You are talking about a man, along with many others, who took a program from Division II to an FBS mid-major contender where winning six games in the FBS is considered a disappointment.

I know several Troy graduates on a personal level, that will proudly drop $200 on an AU/UA game, but they want freebies to Troy. I've provided them some in the past. I now choose to give tickets to newbies or people that are really interested in Troy.

Just my personal preference.

I can't see how we won't at least be 7-5 or better next year. We had three true returning starters to start the year including a very young o-line getting used to a new coach. This year we should have a lot more returning, year two in the bolt system, a new corners coach (rumored), two new teams in GSU and ASU that might not be up to SBC standards yet, as well as Louisiana and Arkansas State at home. Looking to be a better year.

I'll project 7-5 for Troy.

When you say "take us" to FBS you mean he happened to be employed as coach when we moved divisions...what a feat! And yes .500 is a disappointment anywhere, any level, any sport going .500 is considered bad you are the only person I have ever heard say otherwise.

I've never stated that LB hasn't built anything at Troy.

It's unreasonable to expect people to pay to see the product Troy puts on the field. We should just be glad anyone shows up at all given that there are better options in this state. If it wasn't my alma-mater I wouldn't care either.

UAB sucks because they have no resources, South Alabama is doing everything they can to get better and are doing pretty good at it, and I don't even have to mention the two schools we all know about, but the difference between all these schools and Troy is that they actually want to win, they actually care. UAB is garbage but they don't reward it, they aren't okay with it. Troy wants the adoration without the effort...doesn't work that way.

Coach Blakeney is 174-104-1 at Troy. 97-19-1 at home. 48-25 in the Sun Belt conference. The highest winningest percentage in the conferences history .658.

TROY isn't as god-awful as some would lead others to believe. Two years ago, a lot of senior talent graduated or left and that resulted in a 3 - 9 record. Even though we're at a break-even record, the improvement, how ever gradual, exists. I'd like to get on with the business of previewing what the spring line-up would be in March & April...

When you say "take us" to FBS you mean he happened to be employed as coach when we moved divisions...what a feat! And yes .500 is a disappointment anywhere, any level, any sport going .500 is considered bad you are the only person I have ever heard say otherwise.

No one said it wasn't a disappointment. Troy should be much better next year.

I want to clarify my recent negative comments are based more out of frustration and disappointment concerning coach Blakeney and some perceived thoughts from observations I have seen. I believe there are changes being made internally and personally in improving the intentionality of all they do. I'm back all in. While my concerns that I posted were true concerns and worthy of conversation on here, I am now saying personally those concerns are being met. I want to encourage every Troy fan on here to get behind where this program is going. Next year has opportunity to be great!

Not sure what thread it was that I roled all my concerns out but want to make the battle cry very public. GO TROJANS!!!

March and april is looking good. There is determination in the guys returning to improve things other than football skills alone. This will be bigger than anyone we bring in. Improved discipline could make next years team one of the best ever. The talent is there.

Three consecutive non-winning seasons is about as bad as you can get in CFB. Graduating seniors shouldn't result in 3 wins, that's a ridiculous point.

Again you are clueless.

Every school in this country has years were they have more seniors than normal graduate...and it doesn't result in them losing nine games the next year. Only winning three games is the result of much greater problems.

You are just a homer, plain and simple.

Good post! I think that some view those that are staying the course as approving of the past 3 seasons. That couldn't be further from the truth. No one wants to win more than the coaches and players. I'm going to support them while they are here. The constant belittling of players and coaches has become an eyesore here. I understand the frustrations of losing, but reading it over and over on a daily basis is a bit much. I know of several players and family members that are on this board that want nothing to do with the Troy fan base anymore. Especially those of you that eat them up to their face and the come back a few weeks later and ridicule their sons in a personal level. I'm as open as anyone on this board about who I am. I have no reason to hide it. I believe expectations were a little high this year, for some, with Bolt returning. I think that has added to the level of frustration for some. It seems when someone gives back the negativity poured out by some on here they can't deal with it.

Happy Holidays and Go Trojans!!!!

It's a reality of life. It happened but the sun came up after the season. I have a healthy respect for what TROY accomplished on a shoe-string budget, but to think that lightning will be caught in a bottle again without a level playing field, that's a ridiculous point. It's more about what the coaches don't have to work with than it is the coaches themselves...

Talent is there, whether the discipline is I have my doubts. That is the one thing I am hoping for because it is desperately needed.

Could we be sucking due to a lack of resources as well?? Auburn sucked LY but someone stepped up, made tough decisions and re$ources were available to make changes.

USA, UA and AU seem to have resources to "over" down years. What about your Alma Mater??? Seems to me Troy Fans & ALum want wins without the effort$.

He didn't "build" anything, if he did we wouldn't suck right now. I stand corrected...he built a mediocre football program.

Ok....You need to do your homework. Obviously you don't know enough about Troy football history to even be in this discussion. Troy lost talent and leadership coming into the '11 and '12 seasons that was extremely rare and dynamic.

What are you 16 and think you know what you're talking about because you rule on NCAA Football 2013. Or are you this crazy and clueless.

If by homer you mean Troy through and through and willing to do all I can to make sure the Trojan Nation grows and improves. Guilty as charged. GO TROJANS!!!!

By homer I mean your ability to reason has been compromised by your fan-dom. Again your excuse is a lame one, having some people graduate can effect a season for sure, but shouldn't result in a three win season...that is most obviously a sign of bad recruiting. Our coach is garbage...stale garbage...used to be good, but isn't anymore...deal with it.

You need to read my posts in other threads. My ability to reason is fully intact. Unlike you I do my homework and I have just found the answers to the questions I posed in the other threads. I believe that Trojan Nation will have much to cheer about next year.

Now concerning your ignorance. How can I help you? Hemi, Brutha, dgoebel and some of us can help you understand a little about Troy football but let me add this disclaimer - we can't fix stupid.
