Tough road game to open the season. Troy has to keep pace with a good scoring Rebel team. Hopefully, Cunningham has a great debut and Troy can start the season off on a good foot. I, for one, am excited to see the new look Trojans.

There best player, Marshall Henderson, is not going to play tonight. He was suspended for the first three games for testing positive for drugs. That will help Troy.

Saw some upside from this team. Cunningham is a good coach that can improve this program. But Troy does not have the ability to go toe to toe with a school like Ole Miss, and will struggle in conference play if they don't make some quick improvements.

I would love to see Cunningham transform this program but he has to create an identity. I'm hyped about the new era, saw potential, but wasn't thrilled to the same sets junior highs run. I've always thought there are 2 ways a small and undersized program without 3 Star talent can grow and grow fast:

1) The Paul Westwood system (see FGCU or VCU). Get out and run. Jump pass lanes, create turnovers and take as many shots as you can, score as fast as you can. If a team can turn up the pace of the game like Westwood did in the 80s at LM, or Shaka has done at VCU, it spells trouble.

2) Be undersized but play big (see Butler or Wichita State). Pound fundamentals into the team, play great defense, take charges, hard hedge screens, extra passes, slow down pace. You need to have great perimeter shooters and be extremely disciplined to be able to play like this.

As for this team: This team will evolve and this program will evolve. Good play guys. Learn from some mistakes tonight, and get ready for the next one. Long season and lots of chances to win.

Things I took away from the game:

1. Our defense is much better
2. Kevin Thomas is going to be amazing
3. We still take too many bad 3s
4. Our offense is going to be a work in progress all year.

Overall, I liked what I saw. The team fought hard and showed improvement. They'll be better this year
