Troy will introduce Western Kentucky assistant Phil Cunningham at a news conference on Tuesday.

Multiple sources told CBSSports.com that Cunningham, who has spent last season with the Hilltoppers after working for Rick Stansbury for a dozen years at Mississippi State, has been chosen over N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz.

Cunningham replaces Don Maestri, who retired after 31 seasons and more than 500 wins. The Trojans were 12-21 overall this past season and 6-14 in the Sun Belt.

Cunningham recruited Jarvis Varnado, Jamont Gordon, Arnett Moultrie and also Monta Ellis, who wound up going directly to the NBA out of high school. He has also been on seven NCAA tournament teams in his time at Mississippi State and Western Kentucky.

The connection with Cunningham and Troy State is that he and athletic director John Hartwell worked together at Georgia State -- where Cunningham was an assistant under Lefty Driesell.

I have to admit, this comes as a surprise after everyone pretty much thought it was Lutz.

I actually like this hire. He is a good recruiter and can be someone who fires up this program. This is his chance at a good head coaching job.

SEC experience, knows the Sunbelt, coached with Hartwell, seems to recruit well (not a basketball fan, I didn't know the names). Hopefully he'll be a good hire

We haven't been Troy state since 2003 SMH

Never been upset about "Troy State" references...we have a long history and "State" is only a small part of it. We should be proud and embrace it.

Also, you should just give up posting on that loser board for Alabama Birmingham. They are just bammer wanna-be's, plain and simple. Just little "red headed step children." That's all they are, all they will ever be. They don't deserve "Troy smack."
