Troy has had some good JUCO players over the last several years, however I think they should be used more as a band-aid than anything. Develop players within and bring in JUCOs to help with an immediate need. JUCOs should not be a long-term solution.

dgoebel

Long term this is a great move. These guys will live and play together for 4 to 5 years. Team chemistry is very important. The only player I'm seeing that was on all the lists as a Troy commit, and hasn't yet signed in Montavious Smoke. He had actually given a soft verbal according to Scout, but don't know his status. He was also from Stanhope Elmore along with Arie Anderson and Xavier Fields.

Antonio Johnson and Keion Payne are two that enrolled in January that should make an immediate impact.

Antonio Johnson had 76 catches for 921 yards and 12 touchdowns last year at Hutch.

Keion Payne was a former 4* DB at Miami... hopefully he got his act together because he deffinately has the physical attributes to be a great player.

Probably won't know the answer to this for 4-5 years. :taunt003: (couldn't help myself)

However, based on the current perception of these players, I think it will be tomorrow before we know how we did compared to the rest of the conference. Also remember, today is not a deadline to sign, it's just the first day to sign, so there could be more to sign at any school after today, which could alter the landscape on how each school ranks.

Currently:

Scout still has us at 14 commits- 2 3*s

Rivals has 21 as signed LOI's- ranked 4th in the SBC and only gives us 3 3*s

FAU has been getting lots of players from the panhandle in recent years, and that hasn't helped them much. Unfortunately, the panhandle hasn't had many really "hot prospects" in the last few years.

I will say, however, I look forward to seeing how Jay Warren from Navarre does with FAU. I do think he was a tremendous miss for Troy. He's got unbelievable field vision when running the ball. He had numerous 200 yd + games this season, and Navarre made it to the State Semi-finals with a lot of help from his running.

And by the way, to say "no team wins without Florida players", is the most preposterous and arrogant thing someone could say.

So we should focus on the state of Florida and not the best overall players we can get? By the way we still have some Florida players, so we should be a lock for a few conference championships.

Whatevs. Were gonna be Texas State like a drum. LaLa and Western still questionable.

Texas State is looking to make a splash immediately. They have signed or have commitments from 11 JUCOs. They've signed 4 3-star players, with 4 more committed, but not signed.

They could be a flash in the pan, or they could use it as a kick-start for the program, but they will be a force to be reckoned with this fall. They will represent Texas in a way North Texsa never did.

If my calculations are correct, we signed 16 guys that are 3 hours (plus a few minutes) or closer away.

IIRC, several people on here were complaining that we weren't recruiting what was right in front of us, or our backyard.

Now that we did that, people complain that we aren't recruiting Florida enough.

Can't win for losing on this board!

In our area,247 does a much better job of evaluation hands down.

Scout typically adds Stars based on offers and always bumps a 2** to 3** a few days before signing for political reasons while 247 stick to their guns without the big conference politics.

Rivals wouldn't know how to drive to alot of the rural schools around us sadly.

Go Troy!

Add today's signees to what was announced last month as mid-year signees and the next few years look real good for Troy. Especially if you add last year's class, and if we can keep up the same approach for the next couple years.

Rishad Goode, Defensive Back, 6-0, 190, Madison, Ala. (Bob Jones HS)
Aaron Herring, Offensive Lineman, 6-5, 280, Alachua, Fla. (Santa Fe HS)
Antonio Johnson, Wide Receiver, 6-1, 201, Oklahoma City, Okla. (Hutchinson CC / Putnam City North HS)

Hummmmm....no endzone dressing roooms yet, we have had 2 straight years of down....hummmm small town....hummmmmmmmmmmmmm, You know what, we really did pretty dang well collectively for all that......GPS be dangedm, I like our classsssssss!:devil22:

And by the way, to say "no team wins without Florida players", is the most preposterous and arrogant thing someone could say.

Yep.

So we should focus on the state of Florida and not the best overall players we can get?

Nope; people have backyard bias; this doesn't mean the athletes they're watching will produce at the college level. Time to take the hometown goggles off.

Petrino signed 14 from FL and most in the Tampa south market, ULL signed 5 from FL, Georgia St. 2, ULM 0, and I can't find anything on USA. Texas St. 0 but they signed some from California. Didn't look up FAU, FIU, UNT or MTSU since they have left. On paper it looks like a good class for Troy. We got players at positions we really needed, especailly OL, DL, RB and DB. Welcome to the Troy family all signees....best decision you ever made :thumb:

I do think it is safe to say that the last 4 national championships went to teams with most of their players from the state of Alabama. LOL

Just curious but how do we land Lue from Carrolton Texas and the Edwards kid from Mississippi? We usually have our out of staters other than Georgia and Florida by way of Juco or other convoluted paths......The Edwards kid does not look like to bad of prospect so what is the connection? Any insiders know the scoop.....you know Mississippi State....or for that matter other schools such as USM and Lousianna schools etc....:confused013:

That is why 3 of Alabamas top 62 (2 deep chart at all positions) where from FL on this years national championship team.

IMO you don't know what a player will like or not like. They both might have a good connection with the coaching staff? Fell in love with the campus? Thought they had a shot a playing early? You never know. That is why it pays to recruit aggresively because you never know who will say yes. Great additions to the Troy family and a great job recruiting them.

What state was Trent Richardson from when he was there? Nobody said Alabama doesn't have HS talent..they do. I played with a lot of really good players from Alabama... Mike Turk, Freddie Thomas, Brent Roe and many, many more. But we also had a lot of FL players to. The point is they have FL players, both Bama and the Barn. Saban picked up the all time HS rushing record holder from Yulee, FL this year also. You need a mix of both.

I dont think you need a mix of any state as long as you get good players. I think if a team wins with a lot of florida players, its coincidence, because for every team that loads up on FL and wins there's teams that load up on FL players and loses. There is no doubt there is talent there, but there is not so much of a lack of talent in surrounding states to justify a need for florida kids.

You do realize that we had 31 players on the roster from Florida last season? If I am not mistaken we signed 2 players from FL and 3 enrolled at the beginning o f the semester.

I don't know, and don't really care to look but I would assume most of the 31 from last season + the 5 new guys gives us a hefty amount of boys from Florida.

Please stop complaining that we don't have players form Florida.

I understand the need to pick up talent close. 1) They probably don't get homesick 2) It can add to attendance with people from that town/HS going to the games 3) It is more cost effective recruiting wise. Being a former player and alumni, I of course want to see some players around my area go to Troy..I am partial. But the other point myself, and others have made is, unless you are down here, you don't really understand the scope of how much talent there is. FL is a very populated state, especially South of me here in North Cent FL and how good these teams are. Bradenton Manatee, Orlando Dr. Phillips, Lake Brantley, Apopka, The Miami Schools (speed that is mind boggling), Pahokee, Belle Glades Central, Lakeland High, Tampa Plant, St. Thomas Aquinas etc. It can't hurt anything trying to get some of these players, especially at skill reciever positions. Not dissing any state, just partial to mine. I still think this was a great class also. Go Troy!!!!!

Not complaining about FL players, I did make a comment early in the signng period that we might sign a player from FL which I could not ever remember happening. Proud of the ones we got for sure. There have been others just stating we are only looking at less than half the state..that was the point. Would it make sense to only recruit Alabama south of Montgomery or South of B-Ham?. The vast amount of talent is south of where I am at in Ocala because the majority of the population is Orlando south. My wish is that we recruit the whole state. I am glad and proud of all 31 FL players we have, and the ones from AL, MS, GA, TX, KS, MD, KY or any other state we have.

Are we demanding a quota system? We must have so many from Alabama, so many from Florida, so many from Georgia, so many from this backyard, so many from that back yard?

Hell, we apparently signed 3 from Stanhope... that is my backyard and I don't have a clue yet as to how good they were for the Mustangs. But I will be asking around.

Winning programs, including Alabama (which grabbed several kids iout of South Florida today), have key players from Florida. Fact.

My point was to say that it appears Troy has changed its geographic philosophy on recruiting to stay closer to home. Will that work? Time will tell. I seriously doubt scholarship offers are made according to how many fans a recruit can draw.

In the meantime, every program from Miami of Ohio to La. Monroe to East Carolina to Arkansas are all over the place down here, probably for a good reason.

As for FAU and the Panhandle, this is by far the heaviest that program has ever delved into that region.

My point was they did not have a lot of FL players. Troy has way more FL players than Alabama has had the last 2 seasons. The proof is in the pudding that it is not the state the player comes from but the player. The remark is nonsense about needing FL players to win.

I think it is brilliant to redirect our recruiting strategy as the coaches did this year. Every school in the nation is trying to fish out of the same spot. Saw an article where Bowling Green State was encouraged by the number of florida recruits. With the increase of all the mid majors going to south florida it is very logical to think that programs we compete with are passing up great athletes on the way to florida. This year it looks like we got high quality athletes closer to us. Works for me! Pumped about this class.
