Hoover High in Hoover, Alabama has produced a number of talented players throughout the years. One of this year's talented Hoover Bucs is safety prospect Max Lerner. The 5-foot-10 188-pound Lerner currently holds offers from Southern Mississippi and MTSU, but also has the eye of a couple of BCS level schools.
Last weekend, Lerner took in one of those BCS level schools for an unofficial, when he attended Vanderbilt's 31-23 victory over Ole Miss.
"I enjoyed it, I sat at the top of stadium, I like to sit up high when I watch games so I can see everything," says Lerner. "Vandy won, and I got to talk to coach Robbie Caldwell and a couple of the other coaches. Still no offer, though."
"I was impressed with Jay Cutler and the running backs, and I got to see my former teammate, Joel Caldwell," says Lerner. "He didn't play, but he was dressed out." Caldwell is a true freshmen at Vanderbilt, and was a member of Hoover's three state title teams.
Lerner says that besides Vanderbilt, he's still getting interest from Tennessee, Air Force, Northwestern, UAB, Troy, and Southern Miss.
"I think Air Force might be close to offering it seems, but I'm not sure," says Lerner. "All of them say that they are going to offer, but none say when they actually will."
"I plan on taking a visit to a Southern Miss game, but don't know which one yet," says Lerner. "I also plan on going to see Georgia play at Tennessee."
"I went to the Auburn/Georgia Tech game a couple of weeks ago," says Lerner. "I've been going to Auburn games since I was little."
Lerner says he's still just going through the process, and some of the coaches have told him they are just waiting to send tape and waiting to attend some of his games at Hoover. "I'm sending a tape of last weeks game to Vandy, Tennessee, and Northwestern probably."
"I want to see all who offer me," says Lerner. "I like Tennessee...Southern Miss has offered me, I like Northwestern a lot, and think Vanderbilt will offer."
In the mean time at Hoover, Lerner has gotten off to a good start for the #3 ranked high school team in the nation according to StudentSportsFootball.com. So far he has posted over 22 tackles, one forced fumble, and a interception that he returned for a touchdown. This friday, the Bucs go to Tuscaloosa County.
"The first three games, I had to play at corner cause of an injury," says Lerner. "Last week I got to move back to safety (against Spain Park) and had about 12 tackles in a 24-10 victory."
Max Lerner is rated the 35th best prospect in the state of Alabama, according to Rivals.com preseason Alabama Top 40 rankings.
