MURFREESBORO — Conference USA’s decision last week to add Old Dominion as its 14th member school in 2013 essentially defeated MTSU’s bid for the same spot — but contrary to some fans’ perception, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

MTSU administrators tried in various ways to sell the university as a prospective new member to CUSA over the course of the last five months, as detailed in 142 emails obtained by The Daily News Journal through an open records request.

The chain of electronic communiques sent and received from MTSU President Sidney McPhee and Athletic Director Chris Massaro show that the university made an extensive sales pitch to CUSA that included multimedia presentations, personal connections, campus visits, Tennessee Board of Regents authorization, various emails and enlistment of a former Mid-American Conference commissioner as a consultant to draw interest from CUSA in the league’s membership expansion.
