The Giants dodged a big bullet when they learned that starting right defensive end Osi Umenyiora wasn't badly hurt Sunday against St. Louis. Umenyiora only has what the club is calling a sore foot.

"The X-rays didn't show any problem that way," coach Tom Coughlin said. "He was a little bit better today and hopefully that will just continue to get better."

With the exception of Will Peterson, who has a back injury, all injured players could be ready to play when the Giants resume action a week from Sunday in Dallas. The exception might be linebacker Carlos Emmons, who missed the St. Louis game with a sore knee.

"It's going to get better, but whether or not it's significant to the point where he can go ahead and resume practicing, I won't know," Coughlin said. "This is a good time for him because, in theory, he's got this week and a good part of next week before he has to resume. So, we're hoping we see improvement."

With Emmons sidelined, Nick Greisen started for the first time this season.

"He played well," Coughlin said. "He did a good job in the game. He was around the ball a lot. He had nine tackles (five solo) and he did play well."
