Recruiting update: Today (Wednesday) begins the midyear signing period. Troy can add players until the last day to enroll in the spring semester. The list should be a lengthy one.

I believe these guys are set to sign, but will have to double check and see if they actually do:

**LB Wayland Coleman-Dancer from Mississippi Delta Community College committed on Tuesday and said he is signing today.
**DE Brandon Timmons from Northwest Mississippi Community College told me when he committed that he would be a January enrollee.
**DB Shaquille Beverly from First Coast High School in Jacksonville will enroll early. Not sure if that means he signs a LOI during this period or not.

Punter Will Scott to sign with Troy (http://www2.dothaneagle.com/sports/2011/dec/21/punter-will-scott-sign-troy-ar-2909615/)

Punter Will Scott from Gulf Coast (Miss.) Community College will sign with Troy during the midyear signing period and enroll in January.

Scott, originally from Lucedale, Miss., has impressive credentials. He was a second-team All-American at junior college this year and averaged 43.3 yards per punt. He will challenge for the starting job vacated by graduating senior Will Goggans, a four-year starter.

Two other defensive linemen will sign Wednesday in 6-4, 245-pound end Pat Moore and 6-3, and 320-pound tackle Anthony Payne.

“Moore is a physical, strong and intelligent player,” Smither said. “He’s going sign with South Alabama. Payne will sign with Murray State. I thought Ole Miss might take him. This is an athletic big man. He’s a Warren Sapp-type who can play the run.”

One player Smither loves in middle linebacker Eli Cantor(sp Canton). He believes Troy is getting a steal.

“Eli is going to sign with Troy,” Smither said. “He’s strong, fast and intelligent. He got through here in one year and became a qualifier. This is a Brian Urlacher-type of player. A lot of teams will be regretting not taking him.”

Why are we not hearing about the two players we lost this year to academics? Thought they were suppose to return to Troy and be a BIG help. Some seemed to blame their leaving for our offensive woes so coming back should solve some of those problems. Any word?:confused-smiley-004

Canton, a 6-2 240-pound linebacker, helped lead one of the most tenacious defenses in the state. The freshman finished the year with 50 tackles and helped spearhead an effort early in the year that saw the Tigerdefense not surrender a touchdown in over 193 minutes. Canton also led the Tigers in tackles for loss with 11 on the year.

After giving up a touchdown with 11:29 left in the season opener against East Central, the Northeast defense went until the fifth game of the season before surrendering another touchdown.

Drew's blog:

And then you get the two receivers who missed the year because of grades.
***Jamel Johnson - played at Holmes CC as a sophomore, even tweeted that Auburn called him but he was firm to Troy. Will be back for spring and will be a junior in the fall.
***Chip Reeves - Was ineligible this year and will be a fifth-year senior in the fall if he holds up his end of the bargain. Unsure if he'll participate in spring ball but he knows the offense and speed doesn't usually slump if you keep working at it. And he's got speed.

It sounds like Smither's says Eli Cantor has decided to commit to Troy yet no mention of him from Drew or anyone that I know of. Strange that he would say that prior to an official announcement. What's up? Did I miss it? Don't see him on the latest list from drew.

Drew mentioned in one of his blog post that he was heading out of town for the holiday and wouldnt be updating very much the next few days.

Everyone needs a break every now and then!

I am excited about this kid coming in. Sounds like he could be a good one!

The 1st question I can't answer, but it should be easy enough to find out from a classes schedule for the spring. The 2nd is always the 1st Wednesday of February. :thumb:

He could be a big part of the turn around we all hope happens next year. I love his commitment to Troy over other offers. Says a lot about him. It is great to see sad events turn out good. Here's hoping! LB does a wonderful job in helping kids succeed if they want to.

Some thoughts on Troy's midyear guys (http://dothaneagletroy.blogspot.com/2011/12/some-thoughtsresearch-on-troys-midyear.html)

Troy will add 15 guys who are on scholarship in January. That's a lot, but when you're 3-9, some changes in personnel need to be made or take care of themselves. Troy's coaches should be commended for pulling in what looks to be a good JUCO class on paper and we'll see who stands out this spring. We'll go position by position.

This is a lot, but remember that Troy was 3-9 last year.

***The biggest thing I take is that, with the defensive signees, they're really looking for guys to come in and play big roles right away, regardless of how many returning starters are coming back. I think the offense is pretty set and loaded up with some good-looking high school receivers. Troy certainly needs that and some guys on defense who can make some stops.

Chris Humes (http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/evaluation/_/id/120053/chris-humes) (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) has set up three official visits, according to Spain Park coach Chip Lindsey.

Humes is an instinctive defense back with good cover corner skill-set. Has good height and a muscular frame with more than adequate arm length. Has the size to match up with today's bigger college receivers. Speed is very good and he plays fast aided by his sound awareness and diagnosing skills. Does looks to have better burst and recovery quickness than top-end speed. Has lock-down type qualities. Shows fluid hips and great feet turning and running in man-to-man. Can press and play aggressive with his hands taking away leverage. Very balanced and quick in his footwork and movements; can mirror tightly off the line and is difficult to create separation on. Transitions smoothly and is quick, fluid and direct out of his breaks. Closes fast when jumping underneath routes and shows good burst out of his pedal. Makes solid contact and has a strong overall body but would like to see him wrap up more consistently as a tackler. Demonstrates a lot of savvy in zone schemes. Soundly anticipates the pass and closes the cushion fast. Confident in his play and has a lot of natural skill to develop as well as some coveted intangibles at the position. Ball skills could use polish, he appears a bit quicker than fast, but we still feel like Humes is a sleeper and will be a late bloomer on the recruiting trail.

Are we even recruiting a high school D lineman? This seems to be the one area where we are lacking in HS recruits. D Ware, Al Lucas, and Osi should be reason enough to recruit some HS DL. Any insight on anyone we are looking at besides juco in this position?

That is a question I was also wondering about. Are you talking DT, DE or both. Below are DE. Two Fr and one So.

Xavian Evans (http://troytrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2476&path=football) DE Jr.
Deon Lee (http://troytrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2486&path=football) DE Fr.
Juwan Jones (http://troytrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2485&path=football) DE Fr.
Jonathan Massaquoi (http://troytrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2388&path=football) DE Jr.
John Clark (http://troytrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2351&path=football) DE So.

Tyler Sizemore (http://troytrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2407&path=football) DL RFr. caught my eye last spring. He looks like he has the size and ability to help.

There is no doubt the DL has a lot of questions to be answered.:confused-smiley-004

Sizemore left the team last year. I really like Clark, but I don't think he played any at defensive end. He is a DT. The two young guys I'm not sure of their status. Evans well....

If we go to a 3-4 alignment you would have Teart, Willams, and Clark as the nose tackle. Tony Davis would be a defensive tackle with all the others in that group.

Just looking at the numbers on the line and linebackers I would think it is a real possibilty. Along with the fact that some won't be back for whatever reasons.

There has been some scuttlebutt regarding the switch...loading up on LBs mid-year would support that theory...:thumb:

Yes, we have too many bad linebackers and not enough bad lineman, so it's a natural move. Finally, JR makes an adjustment!!!
