The Troy Trojan golf team is hitting the links, practice greens, and driving range in preparation for the 2011-2012 season.

“We are excited about where our program is going” said head coach Matt Terry. “We have nine new players between both teams, and we expect them to contribute.”

The men’s team turns to four newcomers, Will Clowdus, Jake Tucker, Tolver Dozier and Phillip Brennan, take over for four departed seniors.

“The new guys are all extremely smart,” said Terry. “We can spend less time on their classroom worked and more on getting them acclimated to college golf.”

It is the same song, different verse on the women’s side as they welcome five new faces to their roster. Haley Lawrence, the only senior on the women’s roster, is the leader of the team. Lawrence won the Alabama Stroke Play Title last year and Terry expects her to contend more in 2011-12.

“Haley came on real strong in the spring, and had good summer workouts, as did all the girls,” Terry said.

Both teams will see action in the Golfweek Program Challenge in Pawley’s Island, S.C. The Golfweek Program Challenge is a one of a kind tournament that invites schools from across the nation to bring both the men and women teams together to crown three different champions: men, women, and overall combined.

“It’s a neat concept and will help us get some coverage through “Golfweek” and also gives us an early look at some teams that we will see during the season” said Terry. “Anytime we can see what North Texas has, it will help us come March, and I want to get a piece of Jacksonville State because they are an in-state team.”

The Trojans will hit the links for “the Challenge” on September 11-13 in South Carolina.
