First commit for Trojans (http://dothaneagletroy.blogspot.com/2011/05/first-commit-for-trojans.html)

Troy has itself a pipeline to First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Fla.

Defensive back Shaq Beverly has committed to Troy, per rivals. I hope to talk to Shaq at some point. Trojans signed running back Duron White and cornerback DJ Jones (JUCO) from there last season.

This is great news!

This is also of note, because we'll be unlikely to get recruits out of Jacksonville for much longer. As of a week or two ago Duval county schools cut ALL sports, except for Football, from their schools. No baseball, basketball, volleyball... nothing. I have a feeling that many potential athletes from the area won't be there much longer.

FS/CB Shaquille Beverly (510, 185, 4.48) of First Coast High in Jacksonville is claiming offers from Troy, FIU, UCF, Memphis, Louisville, and Vanderbilt.

Beverly shared what hes seeking in a football program. First and foremost, the academics have to be a powerhouse like the football program. Im looking for a school to prepare me for life. I want a good atmosphere in a nice college town or city, and Im seeking to bond with the coaching staff.

The depth chart wont factor into his choice. I dont mind redshirting and learning the college game, but I would like to start contributing in my second year.

Location wont matter much really. My family travels a lot, so it wont play into my decision.

My academics are very important to me. Im on pace to graduate early if I chose, Beverly said. Im definitely interested in graduating early, so Ill sit down and talk to my parents about it. I have a 3.1 GPA and I made the Honor Roll last semester.

[...]

Beverly talked about his strengths as a safety and corner. My physicality, leadership, and coverage ability are my best assets. I feel like Im pretty good at picking up on tendencies, too.

Beverly lacks ideal measurables but is simply a great football player and a very active cornerback. Has a shorter frame and lacks good length but is well-built and physical. Smart, instinctive corner who finds the ball in coverage with a ball-hawk mentally and is savvy in trying to force turnovers. Speed is an area of concern when projecting for the major college level. He closes with good burst and has better play-speed than testing numbers but still shows vulnerability getting beat vertically and will likely need to play in schemes with over-the-top coverage at the next level to have success. Opens and turns with adequate hip fluidity. Shows good feet, balance and quickness mirroring and stemming receivers off the line. Shows good press skill-set as well but can struggle trying to maintain tight coverage when turning to run vertically due to his lack of arm length riding the hip and great acceleration. In deep one-on-one coverage he flashes good ball and leaping skills to help mask his lack of height but we still feel he may struggle on the jump-ball versus today's bigger college receivers. Transitions with less wasted motion breaking underneath. Does a very good job driving on the perimeter pass with explosion out of his pedal and closing burst. We like his skill-set in zone and off-man coverages; when he can play with some cushion. Very active on run support coming up quickly to set the edge and is a very solid tackler who drives through. Breaks down well in space. He is a tough, physical corner who will mix it up underneath and compete. Overall, Beverly can cover and support the run and has some intangibles at the position. We do question whether he can lock down at the major college level with his lack of speed; may contribute more as a Nickel or zone corner.

Glad to see this. I hope Troy can get away from recruiting so many juco players. You only get 2 years and there gone. I like having a kid in the system for four or 5 years.

That goes for all sports but I would especially like to not see Juco basketball players. We should step up our basketball recruiting in the Birmingham area. There is plenty of high schools with talented players that go unnoticed.

Hewitt Trussville in particular is a huge school that ends up sending talent to other states because no one recruits there.

I would like to see them start recruiting high school players anywhere. You get 4-5 years from them and they learn the system. We will have the facilities to do this now.

It would be better for the fans also. Juco players don't usually capture the heart of the fans unless they are just amazing. You don't get the same one of us feeling you get from guys going three years then having that put up or shut up senior year.

Guys like Hogdskin and Knowles from baseball they gave us good freshman seasons and it makes it fun to see how they will develop.

But I'm so glad they gave the arena priority, basketball was just the worst about JUCO guys. We had maybe three or four players that were high school recruits last season.
