Nicholas Resigns as Troy University Volleyball Coach
08/19/2005

TROY, Ala.—Troy University Director of Athletics Steve Dennis announced today that he has accepted the resignation of Trojan volleyball coach Patrick H. Nicholas effective immediately.

Dennis said Nicholas resigned "for personal reasons." Nicholas was set to begin his second year as coach.

"Now our attention needs to turn toward the 15 young women who are preparing to open their season next week," Dennis said.

Dennis also announced that veteran coach Melanie Davis will take over the volleyball program on an interim basis.

In 1993, Davis joined the Troy staff as the head volleyball and softball coach. During her first tenure as the volleyball coach, Davis led the Trojans to a 70-44 record, with back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1994 and 1995, placing Troy in the Mid-Continent Conference tournament in each of those seasons.

The Troy University volleyball team opens its 2005 season next Friday night against the University of North Florida in the first Trojan Spiketacular tournament. Match time is 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena.

Dennis thinks there are 15 women on the volleyball team? Well, it's nice to see how well he pays attention. There are only 13 women on the volleyball team.

Regardless of what's going on with or without a coach, it's important that the girls have some support. From what I understand, they are looking to be a VERY strong team this year. They are young but have some incredible freshmen and a few strong older girls. I think we should definitely all make an effort to watch them play.

Melanie Davis is a good choice (possibly the only choice) for interim coach. She had a lot of success with the v-ball team back in the 90's.

Why the heck was she fired in the first place?

She wasn't fired. The athletic program was in the process of growing and hiring new coaches to coach just one sport. Melanie was given the choice as to which sport she wanted to keep, so she chose to keep softball.

This is where some legitimate media MUST get the facts and really cover Troy. It's not happening and the powers that be must be smiling.

Too much of this stuff is swept under the rug (such as what happened with soccer last year, what ever happened with the RB who had the gun and was expelled, etc.).

We need some real reporting ... and that includes investigation and digging - not just rewriting press releases and calling for canned comments.

Since it's the volleyball coach, no one is going to really care one way or the other why the coach "left" Troy. Case in point, I posted a soccer question a few weeks ago, and no one has attempted to answer it yet.

Now if this would have been the football team, basketball team, or baseball team, you'd have more folks up in arms about why the coach just up and quit.

You might be right, but when that kid from Belle Glade got thrown off the football team for his part in the Krystal gun play incident, he was expelled and gone. I read no update as to the criminal process and as to how his case was disposed of. Simple public records requests could have let us know how the situation ended.
