Holmes is a well rounded athlete that is smooth, speedy and versatile. He has good size on an athletic, lean frame with good overall fluidity in his change-of-direction. This is a player with very impressive acceleration abilities. Has a long, smooth stride and reaches top speed rapidly off the ball. Gets on the toes of defenders quickly and can threaten deep and get behind coverage in a hurry when he attacks alignment properly. He is decisive as a route runner, stabs and quickly plants out of his break with good overall sharpness and the ability to separate. He is utilized both inside and outside and is just as capable of taking a short catch and turning it into a big play as he is stretching the field vertically. He isn't sudden or jittery in his lateral movements after the catch, but rather a slasher that cuts quickly, but stays vertical in his direction with his shoulders square. He has quick hands, can pluck on the run and transition cleanly. Catches the ball away from his frame, tucks and works to make something happen. We feel Holmes has good speed, but it is his ability to kick into a second gear that shows a spark. Once on a straight-line he does plane out at one speed at times. His overall skills, vision, quickness and willingness to hit the crease as a return man gives him big value in the return game. Holmes is a very good prospect that we are a bit surprised has not seen more attention to this point. Recruiting could heat up in the fall.

#6 for the day - Chandler Worthy, WR, Griffin,

Scout has him recruited as a CB, so there's some conflict.
Rivals has him listed as WR though.

5'9", 170

Drew reports him as Jerrel's replacement....

High praise!

True. Brynden Trawick (S) is 6'3", 215 and Terron Bell (OLB), the kid from Monroe, LA is 5'11", 200. Bell I think is expected to be a hybrid though.

Maybe he is going to be a dual sports guy? :rollinglaugh: He could dominate the Women's Rodeo scene. I'm glad we picked up a guy with some size at RB. We need that mixed with #20. I wouldnt be surprised if he ended up at a different position though. Also, its nice to see a guy leave that trash town of Monroe La and come to a big boy school. I hat LaMa so very bad.

Conner is physically gifted, with a great blend of size and straight-line speed. He's tall and isn't a naturally fluid runner, but he could develop into a workhorse college back in a power-running scheme. Has typical north-south rushing skills, and is difficult to arm tackle when he squares up his shoulders and runs downhill. He's basically a one-gear back, but he hits the hole fast and can be a load to bring down after he gains momentum. Shows adequate shiftiness through traffic, but prefers to follow his blocks, lower his shoulder and run through smaller defenders. Has superior upper- and lower-body strength and power. Picks up good production after contact and runs with deceptive balance, despite his taller frame. Finishes runs and keeps his legs churning. Can wear down a defense and make defensive backs think twice about coming up in run support when he reaches the second level. Has mostly straight-line athleticism and lacks the lateral quickness to consistently avoid defenders. Could struggle to pick and slide through traffic in a zone scheme. Needs to regularly run with good body tilt at the next level to remain productive after contact and avoid big hits. Lacks a second gear and burst when he finds an open seam, and he isn't very elusive in space. Conner is a tough, blue-collar competitor and a hard-nosed runner. If his skills don't develop sufficiently on offense, he could make one heckuva strong safety or outside linebacker and special-teamer.
Notes

Some uncertainty surrounding a possible commitment to LSU (Feb. 24). 2007: Carried 205 times for 1,139 yards (5.6 average) and 13 touchdowns. Also recruited by USC, Tennessee, Auburn, TCU, Arkansas, Colorado, Mississippi, Texas A&M...Official Visits: Oregon - November 7th

What I see with Conner is not a back that is going to break the big one for 80 yds for the TD. Instead, he's going to be the one that gets thorugh the initial hole made by the OL for 3 or 4 yards, and then punishes tacklers for 3, 4, 5 and 6 more yards. He's not Dujuan Harris, but then again........he's not Dujuan Harris.

Gardendale quarterback Dallas Tidwell surprised no one when he signed his letter of intent to play football at Troy next year.

The six-foot six-inch signal-caller has been committed to the Trojans (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/11/recruiting_column_dallas_tidwe.html) for months now.

The surprise came just after the signing, when - with the help of a few friends and a couple of roses - Tidwell asked his girlfriend to prom (video) (http://www.myfoxal.com/global/category.asp?c=195956&autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=5526985) at his signing day press conference.

Thankfully, she said yes and Tidwell snagged a college scholarship and a prom date on the same day.

Hey, they did a good job by rivals standards and you just have to tip your hat to 'em. With that said, all we can do is give those sites the information they need. That has been done and they still don't have it right. Especially scout...Ryan Kay and Andrew Kay...both kickers from the same school? Also, there are still guys they haven't graded...those are zeros...

I think this looks like a pretty solid class. Good job coaches! I think long term the biggest pick up could be the kicker/punter. That kid has a leg and could be a true impact player. I went to the Sun Belt BBS site yesterday to check on other recruiting classes and ran on to a discussion concerning Montrell Conner. The same ULL legend in his own mind commented that ULL and Tech passed on Conner because he didn't finish his semesters work at junior college. I first went to the recruiting web sites and one of them, I can't remember which, showed Conner being offered by Tech. I looked at this players bio and it seems that academics are not an issue. He was a full qualifier who transferred to JUCO so he could play while he waited out his eligibility year. His departure coincided with that of Sylvester Croom, his head coach, or conversely, with the arrival of Mullen from Florida. This is the same guy that is always whining about Troy's academics ;he's the guy that that fomented all of the bogus APR threads; He's the guy who predicted Edenfield would b e coaching at ULL; he's the same guy that said Edenfield would be announced as coach in waiting at Troy and we could "book it"." (must be a fan of the old Hawaii 50 television show.) He seems to be seldom right but never in doubt. Finally he referred to one of our posters as "Bubba" in a very snide and condescending way. I find this puzzling in light of the many visits I've made to Deep Louisiana. There appears to be an inverse ratio of teeth to tattoos in this area and large numbers of people living in dire poverty in malaria ridden swamps. The people were, if anything, less articulate than those in Alabama. Having grown up in the mid west, I could easily distinguish their dialect from the folks in south Alabama. As a matter of fact, I seemed to have read where the term, "Cajun" was originally a derogatory reference. I do not begrudge these people the lifestyle that they lead, quite to the contrary, I celebrate it. I guess my point is that neither the ULL people nor we Trojans attended college in a center for culture, education and/or entertainment. Neither of us have any business condescending to one another. This type of behavior renders message boards less in value. I thought they had smack boards for such discussions. I didn't wish to register on the Sun Belt board and start a pissin' match. It doesn't take much to become a bad assed expert given the anonymity of the internet . I just thought I'd like to vent among friends. I don't know what this guy's problem is but he sure does have one.All that being said, this guy has become my first ignore button candidate. One more thing ; I've engaged in this demeaning type of dialogue myself with MTSU fans until I finally got a gut full of myself. In case I haven't done so, I'd like to offer my apologies to all you Raiders out there for any derogatory personal remarks that I may have made. Even if I did so in jest the remarks were in the very least, tasteless . All of thas being said, I now have my first candidate for the ignore button. Thanks for that suggestion, Mike and to my friends on this board, thanks for allowing me to rant.

The 2011 Class Is Heavy On … Defensive ends. Enough of that … Larry Blakeney and the coaching staff appear to be sick of having a poor defense. Last year’s class was the best in the Sun Belt by far, and this year’s class could be even better, at least on the defensive front. With fantastic gets in JUCO transfer Tony Gillsepie, a 6-2, 315-pounder who’ll be planted in the middle of the line right away, and speed-rushing JUCO end Marty Stadom for the outside. JUCO transfer safety Brynden Trawick is a 6-2, 210-pound hitter who’ll be the immediate Sherriff of the secondary. 6-7, 200-pound Dallas Tidwell will be an interesting quarterback to develop for well down the road.

So, first in the belt on scout, last in the belt on rivals? Yeah....

If I remember correctly we go through this every year because Rivals doesnt assign a grade to the Juco guys so it always downgrades our recuiting classes.

Sounds about right...plus we get kids that these services don't have much info on...

Well, not winning the "Recruiting Title" in 2011 depends on which site you look at. Scouts has us first by a lot. I know I should understand my next question but I have been away from the recruiting regs. for so long I have lost touch. Is 20 the maximum number we were allowed to sign this winter? Do we save some scholarschips for later signings or is the number you are allowed to sign directly related to a total number allowed on scholarship at one time and thus graduating seniors/other lost players numbers determine the number you can sign the following year? I need to update myself so HEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP!!

Off the top of my head...85 total schollies, 28 is the national cap for oversigning...26 is what TROY had with this class and the mid-term signees. The most important number in all this is 85. If you don't have that once you sign 25, it always leeway to go over the 25 limit.

Thanks for the update. I thought "mid year signees" were counted in 2010 numbers? Guess this has gotten more complicated since I use to keep track of it.

It depends on how many available spots were there, at the end of the year. Say you have 4 spots available and 6 signees. That would put 4 against last year's count and 2 this year...I believe the medical redshirts are figured into that too...

I do believe that anyone signed before Feb 2, 2011 does count towards 2010.
I could be wrong though. Like TB said 85 is the number that all important when it comes to scholarships. This is the reason Saban has "cut" players to make room in the past for incoming players at Alabama.

A wide receiver from Prattville is going to try to walk-on at Troy. Gotta love big men at the wide out spot:

PRATTVILLE -- If the front door is locked, try seeing what the back way has to offer.

That's the approach Prattville High School's Chris Kennedy and Cal Rogers have decided to take in the hopes of reaching their football dreams.

On Wednesday morning, Kennedy signed a national letter of intent with Georgia Military College, while Rogers accepted a walk-on invitation from Troy University during the school's signing day ceremony in the media center.

The pair declined offers from smaller programs with the goal of eventually suiting up for a bigger school.

"It was a better situation for me to go there first, then try to go (Division I) after a year and a half," said Kennedy, who successfully made 10 field goals and 45 extra points as a senior kicker.

A 6-foot-2 receiver, Rogers says he has family in Troy and even if there wasn't an official offer from the Trojans, it would not have deterred his attempt at earning a spot on the team.
