Troy University and Barnes and Noble College Booksellers team up

TROY – Barnes & Noble stores will soon make their appearance on Troy University campuses across the globe.

On Aug. 1, a five-year contract with Barnes & Noble College Booksellers will commence providing University students a centralized bookstore rather than a textbook warehouse, according to Dr. John Schmidt, senior vice chancellor for student services.

The University will construct a 10,400 square-foot bookstore on the Troy Campus that will be equipped by Barnes & Noble to match the company’s superstores, and will make similar improvements to bookstores on the Montgomery, Dothan and Phenix City campuses.

“The Barnes and Noble partnership is another part of our strategic objective to be student centered. Our affiliation with Barnes and Noble will provide responsive service to students, faculty and the larger Troy community,” said Schmidt. “The new store on the Troy Campus will serve as another point of campus pride for students, faculty, supporters and alumni.”

A virtual bookstore for out-of-state and foreign campuses will complete the offerings.

“The online aspect will lend itself to sell gifts and soft goods to our students around the world who currently have a desire to own TROY branded merchandise, but have no outlet for procurement,” said Sohail Agboatwala, director of auxiliary services who will oversee the contract for the University.

In addition, the Troy Campus bookstore will include a café, a reading area, trade books and wide selection of casual reading. University bookstores in Dothan, Montgomery and Phenix City will also get updating and offer an expanded line.

“It is an honor to have been selected to operate the bookstores for Troy University,” said Max J. Roberts, president of Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. “We look forward to providing outstanding customer service to the faculty, staff and students. We will dedicate all of our resources to ensure a quick and professional transition, meeting student textbook needs, and establishing faculty relations and campus outreach as quickly as possible on all four Troy University campuses.”

Founded in 1873, Barnes & Noble is one of the nation’s largest booksellers. The company operates 525 campus bookstores for many of the nation's top universities.

From what I have heard the plan is to take over the space now occupied by the Fitness center in the Trojan Center and it will be two story area.

Will the type and choice of merchandise be greater and more modern? Hopefully?

That's just another fitness center; it isn't as large or as equipped as the one on campus.

Yea the fitness center in the new rec. building has no free weights just like aerobic machines its smaller than an average classroom. If they do indeed close the fitness center it will be a great mistake a lot of student used that place. It would be good for Walt's though because membership would sky rocket.

From what i have heard is that it will be an entirely new construction added to the trojan center. The prevailing "rumor" is that it will be built on the second floor of the trojan center above the existing fitness center. Although i have heard rumors of plans to build an entirely separate facility but i don't put much stock in that one.

tsk tsk tsk people...don't you know, that if you want facts, call the people that KNOW! BTW, there are 2 fitness centers, 1 at the Student Activity Center by the Outdoor Pool, and 1 in the Trojan Center. I spoke with Sohail about this very topic just yesterday. He told me that there will be a "Second" floor added to the current location of the fitness center and that is where the Bookstore will be. The current fitness center will not be moving. This project will reroute the entrance at the parking lot to a different location and there will also be an outside patio area from the relocated coffee thing...whatever you coffee drinkers call it.

I think the move to Barnes & Noble is a genius move. I work in the College Licensed industry & B&N have a solid reputation. I would eexpect to see some higher quality goods & brand names. Names like Jansport, Anitqua, Champion, Twins, Zephyr which are seen in just about every major campus bookstore across the country.

Please excuse the selfish plug. But if you do not get your gear from Jeff or the bookstore, go by Hibbetts in the Troy, Dothan, & Enterprise location. We will have sideline product again this year. From what I am told from by Adidas, the logo confusion has been corrected.
