As I am sure you have all heard by now, the Supreme Court moved our country one step closer to Socialism on Thursday.

This whole idea of them taking land of people who have lived in these houses their entire life is just crazy. I fear this is probably the worst decision made by the supreme court in my lifetime, and IMHO its going to be hard to top this.

I agree with you on that!! By no means do I claim to know the law, but from what I have heard on the news, the decision is totally asinine.
Everyday, the thought of moving back to my home planet is more tempting. Only problem is Troy dosen't have a campus there (YET).

That decision is completely insane. Now government and big business can snatch up whatever they want in the interest of "economic development". Be careful the next time Walmart wants to build a new supercenter in your town.. your house could end up bring on the clearance aisle.

Socialism? Are you serious?
Taking private property for big business is capitalism...not socialism.

I was thinking the same thing. If Kerry had been elected you would have seen Socialism. I'll stop before I start a political war.

You make a great point Sarahbelle. This is an example of extreme corporate abuse - the opposite of Socialism. It's ironic that the more liberal members of the court decided in favor of Corporate America. This is certainly a ruling that should appeal to big-business Republicans. Wal-Mart is dancing in the streets right now.
By the way, I do not approve of this ruling. I feel that the high court went too far in applying the 5th Amendment (eminent domain) to this particular case. What this means is that we as U.S. citizens basically have "zero" real property ownership rights. To now say that we "own our home" is mere illusion.

Buy or build in the country outside of any city limits. You can stay away from the higher property taxes and city fees such as water and sewage. I'm in Headland and my wife and I pay about $55 a month on water, sewage, and garbage alone. Everyone in town is in an uproar over the high rates. I plan to sell my home and move out of the city limits before too much longer. It's not impossible to find a "safe zone" to buy or build in so that you do not have to worry about these issues. I say it's easy...at least in South Alabama. I'm sure it would be different if I lived in New York.

Montgomery is a perfect example of that. If you guys know the lay out here in town take a trip down Ann St. Thank Wal-Mart and the money hungry politicians.

Yea... I live right off on Ann Street. One day there were houses there, the next day it was a vast empty space with bulldozers..... Wondering when/if they'll come for my section of the neighborhood.

One thing they did not mention in this article in regards to Eminent Domain is...the City WILL have to pay the land owners "Fair Market Value". I don't agree with it...but things like this have been happening for years. Look at the Interstates and Right of Ways that States and the Fed build. Prime example.
