Did you get any pics of folks tailgating? I was wondering how that turned out and if the people that attended thought it was any better this year than last.

Tailgating sucks this year! The restrictions and costs are rediculous. I suggest you bring up the Troy Messengers online site and read the commentary about this from Friday. Jack Hawkins is making enemies in Troy.

Do you have a link to that? I could not find it.

Yes, Dr. Hawkins is making decisions that are controversial in regards to the tailgating. There are people who are angry about the changes in tailgating rules and there are people who like what is being done. Me personally, I like the new tailgating area right beside the stadium and the renovation that was completed. The entrance to the stadium now is much nicer. Fees are something that can be debated always, but I agree that change was necessary.

It's also important to note that the new tailgating area is used for tailgating maybe 5-6 times a year, but serves as the entrance to our university 365 days a year. The entrance looked awful before with the dead grass from people driving all over it, and various other things. Now the entrance looks a lot better.

Being a leader like Dr. Hawkins requires that somtimes you have to make decisions that are in the best interest of the university and step on people's toes. People generally don't like change, even if it is for the better, because change is inconvenient. Moving to Div 1 in football was a huge step that was controversial and now look where we are. Changing the name from Troy "State" University to Troy University was controversial with some as well. But now look where we are.

The fact is that in the time Dr. Hawkins has been Chancellor of Troy University, the university has gone nowhere but up in quality. Academic standards for admittance were recently raised. Our athletic programs are performing at a higher standard more and more. Our student enrollment continues to grow. And our campus looks VERY different than it did from just ten years ago because of the constant renovations to improve the University. The facts show that Dr. Hawkins is a great leader for the University and those that are questioning his leadership skills are those that are more or less offended because the tailgating rules changes effects them directly in a way they don't like.

More than anything, the comments on that Messenger article sound more like a small towns locals that are not prepared to have a large University within it. Troy University is not going to remain the small University it once was and it is time that people in the Troy community realize that. Change is never easy...but sometimes, change is for the better.

Well said! You summed it up perfectly. It's only used 5-6 times a year when it is seen 365 days a year and it is after all the entrance to our University!

The new tailgating area looks beautiful. It's the front door to our home. It should be nice.

Troy should set up a less formal area for the folks who want to do their own thing.

it is my understanding the univ wants to create an atmosphere like the grove at ol' miss - it is also my understanding that at group/committee traveled to ol' miss to scope out the grove

i liked the area and think it is a great representation of Troy U.
i like it a lot - it will get better

btw - great game last night - cant wait for uab and ark state back home

Beautiful area, but there sure weren't many tents there. A lot of that tailgating space wound up being wasted.

You obviously have not been around too long and do not understand to larger picture with Jack and the people of Troy. All of the complaining about tailgaqting is really more of the underlying angst against Jack and his wife. They have done little to build the town gown relationship. They have only rubbed elbows where it met their end goals and benefited them personally. After being in office for over 20 years the fact that he is one of the most hated people in Troy is telling. You earn that it is not just a few unhappy people *****ing. Yes, he has done wonders building the campus and the athletic programs and I applaud him for that. I do question the fact that the same contractor has built every structure since Jack has been there. That does not happen with open bidding and yes the process was for the ost part legal but not done with integrity. I will not offer my personal knowledge of Jack's lack of integrity for the benefit of this message board but will state that I do know first hand of his dealings and they would make a billygoat puke. You would not believe the decisons that have been made because that stupid wife of his did not like something. She has no place in the decision making process but for some reason Jack lets her influence decisions. I know faculty that have been fired for not giving one of their daughters the free ride and actually expecting her to do the work.

Ok, enough. As I said, it is a disappointment that the University and the city/county are not greater than their individual parts. That is Jack's fault.

Of course it couldn't be that the city of Troy is equally aloof and obstructive, which I know first hand has also taken place. There are city council members in Troy that have nothing but complete abhorrance for change, and will do everything possible to make sure Troy (the city) remains the reason Troy is Troy. There are fears by people in Troy that they could become like Auburn, where the university is bigger than the city, rather than the city being bigger than the university (figuratively speaking).

And there are things in the works that could make Troy explode in job and population growth in the next couple years, and I'm sure there are people that fear that immensely.

Also, you should increase the resolution to 480 or HD...
