View Full Version : 2011 Offensive recruiting class

IMO this upcoming recruiting year will be our toughest challenge to date. We really need to find solid offensive talent this year:

QB

Tanner Jones will be gone and Hampton/Jenkins/Parker will be Seniors in 2011. Unfortunately, we can't redshirt Parker anymore. I think we have a real issue here. The 2011 depth chart could be: Hampton (Sr.), Jenkins (Sr.), Robinson (RJr.), Parker (Sr.), Barnes (RFr.), Wilkes (RJr.). We should sign 2 or 3 QBs, incl. 1 JC QB. We really need to find a solid three-star HS QB and/or a very good JC QB (at least 3 stars).
I read that next year's QB class will be pretty weak. This means many BCS schools will be signing 3-star talent. Maybe, we should consider trying to land a BCS transfer asap (!).

RB

Harris is an experienced senior and we don't really have much quality depth at RB. Southward (Jr.), Taylor (Jr.), Mitchell (Jr.), Smith (RFr.) will be the more competitive RBs in 2011. However, Southward could be the only top RB next year (2011). We could move either Shelton or Franklin to RB however both are undersized and they are expected to replace Jernigan next year. Unfortunately, Pratt decided to transfer which means we just lost another very talented RB. IMO we got to land a very good HS RB (3-stars and possibly ranked) who could make an impact in 2012 (every-down type of back). In addition, we'll have to sign another talented HS RB. Beckles knows the Atlanta and Tampa areas very well from a recruiting standpoint. I think we should be able to find at least 1 solid RB because we can promise immediate playing time. Actually, I expect us to land a very talented RB next year (top 3-star/ranked RB).

WRs

We'll lose Jernigan, Gill, Bruce, Silvoy among others. However, we managed to sign many talented kids in the last two years incl. Chitty (!), Franklin, Shelton and Williams. Nevertheless, Reeves and Moncrief will be seniors and Jarboe a junior. In addition, I think we still need to find a Jernigan replacement. This means we'll need to sign a very talented (3-stars/ranked) ATH with top speed who can make an immediate impact. Unfortunately, we didn't land Woodyard this year. However, I don't think we'll land a top HS kid at this position. Therefore, we should recruit a top JC WR who can replace Jernigan. Lucky for us, we can offer immediate playing time...

2 or 3 QBs (incl. good mobile HS QB who knows our system, ranked JC QB or D1A transfer)
2 RBs (incl. good HS RB who can make an immediate impact)
4 WRs (incl. someone who can replace Jernigan -> ranked [rivals Top 100] JC)

Why couldn't Parker be redshirted?

We burnt his redshirt year vs. FIU in 2008.

We don't recruit much in northern Alabama but it'd be nice to start doing that more. I think we could start by targeting these brothers (class of 2012 and 2011 respectively) who both go to Bob Jones HS in Madison, up next door to Huntsville. It's the biggest school in the state so there's got to be at least some good talent coming out of there.

Looking at the recruits that Bob Jones in particular has put out over the last few years I've seen commits to Michigan, Georgia Tech, Tulane, Marshall, UNLV, Tennessee Tech, Murray State.... we can out recruit most of those guys, or at least the UNLVs and Murray States right?

Great (GREAT!) future analysis Trojan2003. Way to be looking ahead.

I agree with some of your summations. It'll take a good/great recruiting class every year to keep up with our current past.

I truly believe that, as kids from the same schools as some of our recruits see them do well and TROY on TV, it'll continue to bring in recruits. With Edenfield recruiting in north AL, a few more in-state kids are heading to the school we love!

Right, so he still has a redshirt available

IIRC we did redshirt him in 2008 - but he played in Game #6 vs FIU which means we can't redshirt him anymore.

That's not how I believe it works. Just because you say you are going to redshirt them and then they end up playing doesn't mean that can't be redshirted another year. Since he hasn't used a redshirt year, he could still be redshirted.

Foulpole is correct. You don't officially declare an athlete is going to redshirt with the NCAA. You just don't play them. Once you play them, it counts as a year. DPark still has a year to red shirt.
