I have been very busy the past two days, so I'm surprised noone else saw this. My dad read it in the Mobile Register and called me to let me know.
We need to remember his family in our thoughts and prayers.

A Georgia State University basketball player died in a one-vehicle wreck Saturday in Conecuh County while on his way home to celebrate Easter with his family, Alabama State Troopers and family members said.

He was one of two fatalities resulting from traffic accidents in Conecuh County on Saturday.

Rufus Tikoyo Barnett II, 22, of Monroeville was killed on U.S. 84 about 9 miles west of Evergreen at 2:33 a.m. Saturday, state troopers said.

A passenger, Jeremy Rush, 18, also of Monroeville was taken to Evergreen Medical Center. A nursing supervisor said Sunday that the hospital was unable to give out information on Rush.

A high school standout at Monroe County High School, Barnett was named to the Mobile Register's Sweet Sixteen, a list of the best local basketball players in 2001.

Barnett played for two years at Alabama Southern Community College and then transferred to Georgia State, said Tracie Barnett, his sister.

In 2004, Tikoyo Barnett was named a second-team Division II men's basketball All-American by the National Junior and Community College Association, the Mobile Register reported then.

Barnett was one of the greatest talents to come out of Monroeville and Alabama Southern, said Anderson Ligon, the head coach of the college, which has its main campus in Monroeville.

"He was like the hometown hero," Ligon said.

Averaging about 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, Barnett drew interested from several NCAA Division I schools, Ligon said.

"His dream was to play Division I basketball," Ligon said.

Barnett spent the summer of 2004 studying at Alabama Southern so he could qualify for Georgia State.

"He showed a lot of character (then)," Ligon said.

During his first season at Georgia State, Barnett scored 165 points in 28 games of a 29-game season, according to the Atlanta school's athletic Web site.

Funeral arraignments for Barnett are pending, his sister said.

In another wreck Saturday night in Conecuh County, a North Carolina man was killed and six people from Muscle Shoals, Ala. were injured, troopers said

Thomas Terrell Scott, 36, of Morgantown, N.C., was killed after his 2001 Chevy Tracker collided with a mini-van at about 10:42 p.m. six miles south of Evergreen on Interstate 65, state troopers said.

The 31-year-old driver of the van, Robert Edward Woodall, Jr., and his five passengers: Tomika Woodall, 30; Jacob Woodall, 11; Justin Woodall, 7; Emily Woodall, 4; and Jerry Fisher, 65; were taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, troopers said. Their conditions were unavailable Sunday.
