I wrote to the editor of a college football Web site today asking him to refer to Troy without using "State". He responded with the comments below.

It's amazing how much he knows about our school, considering that he has probably never been there.

We need to set him straight.

It is actually just the sports teams that are only using Troy and only for marketing purposes. I haven’t decided whether or not I am going to change it. Kent State did the same a few years ago and bounced back and forth. In any case, the school is still Troy State.

Please change your references to "Troy University" or just plain "Troy" from "Troy State". The school has not used "State" for a year.

Thanks,
Bob

Here is a quote from a Troy press release from April 2004:

“We will begin immediately using the new name when and where we can in order to make a smooth transition over the next year,” Dr. (Jack) Hawkins said. “But we will not make wholesale change to items that carry the current name until it is time to replace or reorder, such as stationery, business cards, signage and many other items. It has been our intention all along to make this transition in a cost- effective manner.”

We're still gonna be troy state until August. They haven't changed any of the signs on campus with the new name or logo, so I guess they'll do it over the summer. Anyway, its Troy State for just a little while longer!

“We will begin immediately using the new name when and where we can ..."

Isn't this clear enough? What does the stadium say, the basketball and football media guides say?

I just e-mailed the idiot, and referred him to our University website.

The "troy.edu" site has "TROY STATE UNIVERSITY" quite prominently displayed. There are several references to "TSU" throughout the site as well. "TROY" is used, but not exclusively. And this site was updated since the name change.

Apparently, the school is still officially TSU. I would wager that SACS still considers us TSU.

Heck, I still say Troy State sometimes when talking about the school/team. It doesnt bother me when others make the same reference.

I understand that "TSU" and "Troy State" can be found on the old Web site. That makes sense, considering how much effort is involved in removing that reference from volumes of data.

I'm confident an major effort will be made to clean up that site by August, and even then some "Troy States" will be left around here and there. It's part of Troy history, of course.

But isn't it clear that the administration of Troy is using "Troy University" now? That is the new name (as stated clearly by the chancellor, above) and that will be the name of the future.

To refuse to use that name because it might be changed again down the line is ridiculous.

What's the problem with expecting the media (which is charged with being accurate) to have enough respect for the school to use the name its leaders have chosen? Is that too much to ask?

I noticed that it didn't take long for Central Florida, the University of Central Florida, Florida Tech, Florida Technological University and FTU to be called UCF?

Same here.

Accuracy and respect.

We have to have Troy State on the website until the name "officially" changes in August. It has something to do with SACS or something. Anyway, it's been Troy to me for months.

For everyone's knowledge the new website for Troy University will be launched on Feb. 28. I should know since I am the University Web Coordinator. The reason we had not previously changed things from Troy State to Troy University on the website is because of SACS. They gave us the blessing in December to start using Troy University and we have been working on the new website since August. It takes time to make a change as huge as the task we have had before us. I am most will be pleased with the results.

I don't have a problem with university sites and signs and such still saying state. It will be a HUGE undertaking to change all of this.

I also know that some of the sites (Hall School of Journalism, soundofthesouth.org, athletics) have already completed or begun making the changes. I understand why the main site hasn't changed.

However, the sites such as those that this thread was started about need to get their act together. I really don't see us flip-flopping.

Oh yeah, and last time I checked, ESPN.com still had our old logo on their A-Sun page. We should contact them too. At least they are calling us TROY, though.

I'm not getting mad at anyone until we get the HUGE old logo off the basketball floor. I'm sure that was confusing for some on TV last night.

I hear they're re-doing the floor this summer.

I love how the term "idiot" gets thrown around so liberally because a guy who works for a website dealing in NATIONAL SPORTS doesn't want to change from "Troy State" to "Troy" until he sees it as completely official.

It's his prerogative until the school changes everything to "Troy."

Everybody has to find a reason to whine, though, I suppose.

Ty putting yourselves in this guy's shoes.

"Idiot" might be completely accurate in this situation; however the guy insists that the reason for not changing the name on his site is because Troy only uses the name for its sports teams; and because the university might flip-flop and change it back to TSU.

From where did he get that crap?

Tne new name is official. It was officially announced. The administration (remember theleaked e-mail?) asked its staff and everyone associated with Troy to use the new name (remember "no 'TU' and use "TROY" as an acronym?).

The name was changed in key places and on new printed and permanent materials.

What's wrong with showing the respect the school deserves and using its correct freaking name?!

In a sense, I agree that they should go ahead and make the change. However, it was announced that the change would not be official until August 2005. It's only February 2005. Trust me, I was pissed off at first because it was like "It's not official until August 2005, but go ahead and make any changes that you can and we'll just kinda transition everything else." There have been several instances where this year has been called "a transition year." I think that for right now, we need to understand that this poor little guy that's in charge of a website has to do what he's told; I doubt it's his decision. If August rolls around and they're still using "state," then pitch a fit. Until then, let it go. Just because people directly associated with the university have made the change doesn't necessarily mean that every national organization or corporation with ties to us got the memo yet.

The website says "The new Troy University website will be launched February 28, 2005, with the new address of http://www.troy.edu" Let's see if they switch everything over to Troy University after that. They told us there would be a transition year; let's at least give them that year before we get mad about all of this stuff.

I would agree that it is that particular website's choice whethere to use Troy or Troy State until the name is official, and had he stated that in his reply, I would be perfectly ok with it. But his reasons were unfounded and incorrect.
