TROY, Ala. – The Rotary Club of Houston, which annually presents the top lineman in college football with the Rotary Lombardi Award, has added Troy University senior defensive end Demarcus Ware to its "Watch List" for the 2004 award.

Ware, an Auburn, Ala., native, is tied for the national lead in all of Division I-A in sacks this season with eight. Twice this season, against both Marshall and Utah State, he has recorded three sacks in a game.

Ware also ranks fifth in the nation in tackle for loss with 11. The 71 yards he has accumulated on his tackles behind the line of scrimmage is tops in Division I-A.

The Rotary Lombardi Award, which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2004, will be presented to the top lineman in the nation on December 8th at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston.

Former Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman, twice a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award and winner of the trophy in 1987, will serve as the guest speaker at the event this year.

The Lombardi Award has twice been awarded to players from the state of Alabama. In 1986 Alabama's Cornelius Bennett won the award and two years later, in 1988, Auburn's Tracy Rocker took home the trophy. Rocker later served as an assistant coach at Troy.

Ware and the Trojans will return to action this weekend at Arkansas State. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff and will be televised by ESPN Regional Television. The game will be available on UPN stations in Huntsville and Birmingham, as well as Columbus, Ga., and Pensacola, Fla. The game will also be available on WAKA in Montgomery as well as part of the ESPN GamePlan package.
