He did the same thing at Troy half way through the season. I think he had to spend the first few weeks on the sideline for a sense of what his players are thinking.

I remember that as well. Interesting that he is following the same pattern at MTSU. Of course last year at Auburn, he wasn't there long enough to make the adjustment to the press box or vice versa.

I bet that he finally has a coach on the sideline that has bought into his system and TF feels he can trust him. I think that is what happened at Troy, too. He knows he can call better plays from the box where he can see the defense lineup. But he also needs to know the attitude of the players on the sideline because that plays into his scheme, too. If the troops are down.....sometimes that calls for a different style of play calling.

i'm pretty sure Tony started up in the box with Troy, then after the disaster at UAB moved to the field for the rest of the season.

He did not have an assistant at Auburn that knew enough to read the defense for him so he stayed in the booth.
