Troy University's search for an athletics director to replace Johnny Williams, who resigned from his position at Troy on Oct. 21 to accept the position of senior associate athletics director for external affairs at the University of Alabama, is moving along as expected according to Troy Senior Vice Chancellor for Administration and search committee chairman Douglas Patterson.

On Dec. 7, the university's search committee narrowed the field to four finalists. Since that time, Chuck Beddingfield, executive associate director for athletics development at The Citadel, withdrew his name from consideration, leaving Troy with three finalists for their vacant athletics director position.

The three remaining finalists are Sheahon Zenger, associate director of athletics for development at Kansas State University; Steve Dennis, associate director of Tigers Unlimited at Auburn University and Mack Rhoades, executive senior associate athletics director at the University of Texas at El Paso.

"We have three excellent finalists," Patterson said.

"As of now, we aren't prepared to say that one has an advantage over another. We formed a search committee made up of a wide variety of people and there were a variety of opinions on each candidate. I believe that all three would do an excellent job. Now, it's just a matter of continuing with the process."

Troy is currently in the process of running background checks on each of the finalists.

"We're conducting thorough background checks on all three," Patterson said. "We want to have a real good idea of what kind of skills and experience they bring to the position and then we will get all that information to Dr. (Jack) Hawkins and he will make a decision on who will fill the athletics director spot."

Hawkins is currently in Morocco, Africa as part of a delegation of administrators from U.S. universities.

In October, the university had set a goal of having a new athletics director in place by Feb. 1. According to Patterson, Troy expects to have the position filled by the last week in January or the first week in February, but has no hard deadline set.

"We expect to have someone in place by the first of February, but it is not a deadline," Patterson said. "I believe it will happen by then, but I wouldn't call Feb. 1 a deadline."

Why did that one guy withdraw his name. Isn't that an obvious question?

I heard a rumor that it was salary related.
