USA Director of Athletics Joe Gottfried announced Tuesday at a 3 p.m. press conference in the Mitchell Center that he will retire effective Aug. 1.

I did not know that he is the father of Mark Gottfried, former Alabama head basketball coach.

Are wheels already fall of UAB-South train? Why he leave unless he sick or something. He invest lot of time getting football approve. Maybe he see writing on wall - years of terrible football followed nobody.

He did have to deal with cancer but is now cancer free I believe.

"Gottfried, who survived a recent cancer scare, said health issues played no part in his decision. He said he'd been considering retirement for the last seven or eight months and made up his mind about three months ago."

He is also 70 years old, so that may have something to do with it

I think you've got it FoulPolePhenom. I don't care what you've been doing, if you're 70 and have had the same job since you were in your early 40's you deserve to retire and play golf five times a week for the rest of your life.
