I can't help bringing this up one more time. I know your school is changing its name but it won't be official until next fall. You guys get all defensive about being called troy state, even though its still the officila name untli teh fall. But why if you want to be troy so badly did they not take TSU off the player shoulder logos?

First of all, the offical name has already changed. The STATE has been dropped. Our commercials, letterhead, website, etc say Troy University.

I am not sure if you have ever experienced a name change of a business or other institution, but it can be VERY expensive. Therefore, all uniforms that specifically spelled out the word STATE were replaced, but any with TSU in a not so visible place, were not replaced, but will be phased out as funding permits.

No...The name change happened so quickly that the football team didn't have time to redisign and order completley new uniforms. It is also a funding thing, but in that instance it was a timely thing.

Geeze, maybe some people get defensive because some of you keep asking the same stupid question over and over!

The name has been changed. It is official.

In a prudent move, the university decided to use up all the old letterhead, signs, books, uniforms and you-name-it; then replace them with "Troy University" goods. Heck, we didn't even have much new TU apparel this year (and that's the reason for all the "Troy State" shirts and jackets at the bowl game).

All we ask is that non-fans show enough respect to call our school by its chosen name.

Well, well, well. After reading through a lot of posts today, I have decided to come out of retirement to put my two cents on this particular topic. Now, I see a lot of names left over from the old Rivals board, so I fully expect to get flamed by the die hard fans of the Hawkins administration.

Now don’t get me wrong from the beginning here, the university officials have done an excellent job in some areas, they have failed miserably in a variety of others.

For example, the new stadium is a top-rate facility and will definitely help the football program in a variety of ways. However, the new field turf in the end zones this year should clue you in to the fact that the decision to drop the ‘State’ from the TSU name was a decision that very little thought was put into.

To begin with, if any foresight had been used whatsoever the name of the university should have been changed before the university completed it’s two biggest construction projects in the last 20 years.

Yes, I’m talking about the stadium and the quad renovation project. Why in the hell would you undertake two massive, multi-million dollar projects and brand the fool out of them and then change the name of the university?

Stupidity. Lack of long-range vision.

The university had to replace the field turf in the end zones and has a state of the art stadium that has TSU or Troy State on everything in it. The carpet in press box was custom woven with the old TSU logo on it. How long do you think they’re saddled with that carpet. How long will the seat covers last?

I can tell you this though, huge rock the Trojan in the quad is standing on will still read Troy State 1,000 years from now.

On a side note, the most visible symbol of Troy University on the 231 is the marquee sign by the ugliest electric substation in Troy. That thing still has the TSU logo on it.

Bottom line is if you going to change the University name, do it right. I remember laughing during the bowl game because I saw the commercial with Jack talking about Troy University and the first thing I see after that is the old TSU logo.

What a clown.

And he’s also a clown for thinking anyone in their right mind is going to refer to the university as TROY. For all you people that failed English, that’s called an acronym. (Here’s a link in case you need to look it up ... http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=acronym).

So what does TROY stand for?

Totally
Ridiculous
Over-zealous
Yokel

On the bright side, Big Johnny has decided to be important somewhere else. Too bad he didn’t take the idiotic looking Hector and the "Trojan" logo that his monkey designed with him.

Welcome back Moron. Long time no hear from. I agree with you that the admin has done some things very well and failed miserably in others. However, the name change isn't one of those areas where I see it. The university hired a professional company to help with branding. They had no intentin on changing the name--just the "one university" thing. When they got into it, the company recommended it and they followed the recommendation. They had no idea when they built the stadium or quad that the name would be changed. But so what if Troy State is on the quad forever--that's part of our history.

Having people refer to us as TROY--ok, that may be a bit much!

Glad you're back. Look forward to some more debates!

I have very strong feelings on this subject.

Last April when the Admin was feeding all the students bull, I tried to organize a rally to keep the name the same. I was told that it would not be a good idea to have a gathering at a fraternity house because "it would look bad on the organization as far as the admin is concerned".

So I tried to get the quad, was denied, "the quad is too wet to have a gathering on it. It needs to be able to root first" Tried the Ampitheater, it was some how all booked up.

I found a house off campus to have the gathering at, had a band and all it was all in place and the Admin moved the vote up by a day from Sat (day after gathering) to Friday afternoon (night of gathering) and also had the TPD waiting for us at 9pm when we got to the house, with no noise or anything. We were worned that if they had to come back out that they would arrest everyone there.

I will continue to refer to my great school as Troy State, and feel like I got strongarmed by Mr. Stalin, err I mean Dr. Hawkins, I was one semester from graduating and was acctaully told not press the issue if I wanted to graduate on time.

There was even an article about it in the Trop, where the admin lied about what they said and tried to cover their butts. It was pretty pothetic, I even went to the SGA for help and they said they could not take a side. They also held the vote to approve the name change in an emergancy meeting where they had one more then needed for a corum and the vote still only made it by one vote. A friend who was on the SGA at the time told me that she never even got a notice of the meeting and didn't find out about it until it came out in the Trop.

TSU FOREVER!!!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE T-ROY!!!!!!!!!! Lets start calling for Dear Leaders job along with Fleetwoods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [/b]

I have to completely disagree with you here. While I don't agree with all of Dr. Hawkins decisions, anyone in their right mind would have to admit that since he's been our chancellor our university has grown by epic proportions. We are MUCH, MUCH better than when I showed up on campus. Change is neccessary. I like the name change. Some don't. Too bad. It's over. It happened. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it was the wrong thing.

my problem with it is less with the change and more with the way it was carried out in a cloke and dagger way by strongarming the students to stay quiet. All I heard from people was that "when we tried to change it before everyone was up in arms about it" well they wouldn't even give us a chance to. And this is not the first strongarmed act, and probably won't be the last.

TSU FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE T-ROY!!!!!!!!!

I like the change, but hated the previously proposed names.

Even way down here, I read quite alot about the name change for it to have been considered cloak and dagger.

It is odd to still see the TSU basketball uniforms and quad statue wording. These types of very visible things need to be changed soon.

As for the end zones, they have been painted over a couple of times already. Remember the Blue-Gray words there last year?

Im not really sure what the talk about the endzones is about but to clarify the endzones were 100% ripped up and replaced before this season as well the mid field logo. NO paint on either one of those.

Well, then, maybe the end zones were painted over for the Blue-Gray game? I remember a topic last year about how awful the paint looked.

they were painted over for that yes.
and I didnt think they looked that bad.
but it took FOREVER to get them clean.
I think they used the wrong paint or something b/c if you look at the Ga Dome or the Superdome they dont have anytrouble getting markings off and new ones put down.
