Calling All Fans - Troy Hosts USC Upstate (http://www.troytrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17200&ATCLID=3657448)
TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women’s tennis team is calling all fans out to the Lunsford Tennis Complex Friday afternoon at 2:30, as the Trojans take on defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion USC Upstate in their season-opening match.
While most teams are playing indoor tennis right now, the Trojans and USC Upstate will take to the outdoor courts on the campus of Troy and battle the elements in their match.
The Trojans are coming off a strong showing at the University of Georgia Winter Classic a couple of weeks ago in preparation for the tough season-opener.
They will look towards seniors Annabelle Bares and Rawia Elsisi, as well as the returning core of their team from a season ago in which they return all six players off a team that finished 9-9 in the Sun Belt Conference. Bares and Elsisi will alternate between playing number one and number two singles, and last season proved tough to beat at the number one doubles position.
Meanwhile, the Trojans also return the team of Mirte De Bakker and Leonie Guijt, as well as the team of Stephanie Vieria and Caroline Jouanin - who all played singles for the Trojans last season.
Troy also added a few newcomers to the mix in freshmen Viktoriya Lukhinova and Gabrielle Viega to add depth to the team this season - something that was lacking in last year's run to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
However, the Trojans will face a tough match against USC Upstate (1-0), a relative newcomer to NCAA Division I-A who won the A-Sun Championship just one season ago.
Senior Anna Novo enters the weekend matches against Troy needing just one win to set the school record for career combined wins. She tied the mark at Presbyterian on Monday, posting her 62nd career doubles win and school-record 75th career singles win. She also needs just two doubles wins to tie Diana Martinez's school record of 64 career wins. Senior Daniela Lovera needs four wins (two singles and two doubles) to become the fourth player in school history to reach 100 career combined wins.
Novo returns as a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and last year's A-Sun Player of the Year.
The match is free and open to the public, beginning at 2:30 pm at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on the campus of Troy University.
