This is getting really sad. I was really looking forward to hoops; now I just want it to be over.

Rebels control paint, down Trojans 81-49

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss used a stifling defense to keep the Troy University men’s basketball team out of sync and pull away with a 81-49 win in front of 1,607 fans at the Tad Smith Coliseum on Wednesday night.

The Trojans (1-7) fell behind early and only shot 35 percent from the floor while watching the Rebels (5-4) score 46 points in the paint and outrebound Troy, 38-19, en route to the Trojans’ lowest offensive output since they scored 47 at Samford on Jan. 13, 2001.

“When you play a team that is as good as Ole Miss, especially defensively, you have to get some things out of the game that will help you down the road,” Troy head coach Don Maestri. “They play
exceptionally well on defense, and we had some bright spots where we did some thing on their defense that should give us some confidence in conference play. But once again, we had some open looks, and
eventually, those shots are going to fall.”

Ole Miss was led by Londrick Nolen, who led all scorers with 16 points. The Rebels also had three other players in double figures, including the Rebels’ leading scorer on the year, Tommie Eddie, who had 11 points, all in the second half.
The Trojans were led by junior Bobby Dixon’s 13 points to go along with a team-high three steals.

The Chicago, Ill., native did not start for the second consecutive game and provided the Trojans with a much-needed spark off of the bench.

The Trojans fell behind early and shot just 37 percent in the first half. Nolen was the story of the game in the first 20 minutes, scoring all 16 of his points in the first half. The Trojans were led by Dixon’s six at intermission.

The Rebels would not allow Troy a window of opportunity in the second half. Ole Miss shot a blistering 71 percent from the floor in the second half, missing only seven shots, three of which were from
3-point range.

The Rebels spread the floor and worked the ball around to create shots. They made 54 shots on the game and recorded an assist on 25 of those, led by five apiece from Todd Abernethy and Justin Johnson.

Senior Eddie Baker had a six-game streak of scoring in double figures snapped but dished out a game-high seven assists.

The Trojans will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Montgomery to face Alabama State in the Joe L. Reed Acadome. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., while airtime on the Troy Network is set for
6:45 p.m., with Barry McKnight calling the play-by-play and Jerry Miller providing color.

Do we play defense at all? I haven't looked it up yet, but what are teams shooting percentages against us? It's got to be awful. Everytime I read a write-up, the other team has it's "best shooting night of the year".

At least not many people were there to see it.

I was amazed that Ole Miss, an SEC school, only had just over 1500 for the game. I know its their winter break, but UCF and Troy have over half that for our winter games. Crazy!

UA's B Team killed Belmont...we are terrible. How do we not have enough shooting talent to fill the gaps this year? I sure hope some miracle happens and we remember how to shoot before conference play begins.

Basketball is the one sport we won't be competitive in the Sunbelt. The SB is a much better conference than the Atlantic Sun and it'll take a few years before we are going to make a difference.

Yep, the Sunbelt is a basketball league, that's for sure. We'll have our hands full with the likes of WKU, La-Lafayette, UNO, USA, etc. Baseball will be about the same as the A-Sun which means it will be very tough.

Don't forget that FAU will be in the Sunbelt in baseball the year after we are. Sunbelt baseball is going to be very, very good.

You're right about baseball. The SBC has been a multi bid league for the last 7 years I believe. With the condoms (jk Troy) and the criminals (FAU) joining, and from what I hear ULM isn't shabby the baseball will probably be top 5 or 6 conference wise behind the SEC, ACC, Big XII, and PAC-10.

Sunbelt baseball will be awesome. Can't remember if it was UL-M or UL-L that was in the CWS a few years ago, but they were.

But don't count out Conference USA when you list those top conferences. C-USA has the potential to be the #2 conference every few years, and #3 the other years. That's the one sport that isn't hurt by the departing teams, and it is gaining UCF and Rice, in addition to successful programs like Tulane, East Carolina and Houston.

When entering the Sunbelt, it all comes to arena. We need a new one, period.

Just ask any of their fans, and they'll tell you....Mrs. Sippi is a Football School...well until they drop two in a row to Memphis and then beat Memphis in Basketball...now they claim to be a basketball school, but the point is, no one in or around Oxpatch gives two turds about Roundball, and why would they with a crap-hole like the Tad Pad to play in?
