The cornerback competition should be insane this summer with 4-5 main contenders fighting for the two starting positions. It looks like that Trevor Ford, Chris Bowens, Jorrick Calvin and Demarcus Robertson will be competing for the starting CB slots. I wouldn't be surprised to see both newcomers - Calvin and Robertson - to win the competition. However, don't rule out Trevor Ford who is probably the most talented of the four contenders.

“That position will still be up for grabs when we get to the fall,” defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell said. “Hopefully during the fall the cream will rise to the top.”, Dothan Eagle

... Underwood said the leading returnee on defense is Jorrick Calvin, a 5-10, 185-pound product of Scotlandville High School in Baton Rouge.
"Jorrick did an outstanding job last year. He had five or six interceptions and 30-plus tackles. He is as good a cornerback as we have had here at EC, evidenced by the fact that he is being highly recruited by almost every team in the country. He is also a great kick and punt returner. We also plan to spot play him on offense. ... , scout.com, Aug 2007

So, how will they get Ricks on the field if all the CB and S positions are filled? Once there was a fear that the secondary would have no depth...hah! More talent than you could shake a stick at...Troy ended the season 10th in pass defense. No reason we can't duplicate the effort (or better that)

I wasn't sure about Ricks; he can play both positions but we are going to move Terrence Moore to the LB position which means that both JC transfers Michael Ricks and Daniel Sheffield could compete for the starting position this year (safety position). However, both Sherrod Martin and Tavares Williams appear to be the two leading contenders.

The biggest shakeup comes on defense, where senior Terence Moore moves from strong safety to Will linebacker. Two-year starting free safety Tavares Williams slides to Moore’s spot at strong safety and Sherrod Martin, a specialist last year in a nickel slot, moves to free safety, Dothan Eagle

I would bet good money that Jorrick Calvin emerges as the #1 CB. The other spot is a toss up and will probably get inherited by one of the other 2008 recruits.

we are going to move Terrence Moore to the LB position
Actually Terrence will be a Nikel Back not a line backer but because of his size he is a better fit in the 4-2-5 defense we use now because he can help with run support like a LB.

From Drew's Blog: Link: Post-spring look: DEFENSIVE BACKS (http://www.gulfeast.com/index.php/troy_blog/post_spring_look_defensive_backs/)

Martin, Moore and Williams. Martin was the nickel back last year, but Moore, who is about 25 pounds heavier, assumed that role this spring and could be there this fall,

OK, sounds like we're going to be fine in the secondary. Defensive line should be good too. We have Boris Lee at the LB position, but who else do we have coming back? Also, what changes do you think we will need to make to ensure we don't suffer another bad season against the run?

Bear Woods will be at the other LB, Xavier Lamb...Richardson and Golden. Plus Jacoby Thomas and KaNorris Davis...I'm laughin' on the inside because we're underrated by many...Ha! Ha! Ha!

1. Do we have a ton of speed on offense??

2. Do we have more speed than last year?

Should make for an interesting competition. Can the staff keep producing staff that develops like in the past?
